Im here on week 2 of trying to get this super 6 setup on my Duster and im still having the same problem. I ordered the intake to exhaust gaskets from Australia and that sealed up fine. Now here are two pictures of the first gasket I put on last week that had a leak.
This is from a kit from Napa. Now the one leak is obvious, but is it also leaking from the port all the way to the left?
So I took the exhaust and intake (not bolted together, mistake) into a machine shop and the guy surfaced the exhaust and said the intake looked good so he just sanded the paint off the edge.
Now today I go to put it on and after getting the Carter on and everything, it's still idling way too fast and it just dies out when I lower the idle. So I look at the head where the intake and exhaust meet, and sure enough it looks like a leak in the exact same spot as pictured above. Then I sprayed carb cleaner and that spot is the only place that made the engine race a bit.
So here are my questions.
1. I dont know if you can tell by the look of the gasket, but if I take the exhaust and intake into a machine shop together and have them surface both even, do you think it will line up or does it sound like the exhaust is too warped?
2. Should I order that thicker Mr. Gasket 320G gasket just in case? http://performanceparts.com/part.php?partID=183398 I believe that is it but could someone please clarify for me? Also, how much thicker is that gasket than the one you get in the kit at Napa?
3. Is the intake leaking air in or the exhaust leaking out causing the carb to not be able to idle at a normal RPM? Im not exactly sure how it all works.
4. With the problem im having now, is it best to torque the 3 intake to exhaust bolts first, or just hand tighten them and torque the head bolts, then go back and torque the 3 intake to exhaust?
Basically my plan is to have the manifolds surfaced together and then slap on a thicker gasket to make up for any mistakes. Im just not sure if im wasting my time or if I need to find a new exhaust manifold. Thanks for any suggestions.
