The guy I bought my Duster from just found the original front seat (the one in there now is from a later model Dart because the original bench was trashed) and depending on how much it'll cost me, I'm going to have it reupholstered ASAP. The thing's been sitting outside for years, so I'm sure there's rust on it and I'm expecting to have to do some repair work, but do you guys think I could get away with just rattlecanning it once I get the rust off, or would powdercoating be a better idea? |

I wouldn't powder coat a seat frame, just clean it well then hit it with a good primer and top coat. It's all going to be covered up with foam and uphostery anyway and it won't be exposed to the elements. |

this may or may not be the best way, but for surface rust like i assume this is, i use a wire wheel on a drill to clean it up |

Spray 'em heavily with oven cleaner (the original lye type, not the "no fumes" kind), then rinse 'em down with water -- first cold to get rid of the lye, which will have eaten off the paint and rust without harming the base metal, then hot to make sure they dry before they can re-rust. Then shoot with ordinary paint. |

I like that idea. Problem is that I don't know if you can even still buy lye based products in the US as just Joe Consumer.

Dan where do you come up with this stuff!? Between this and the hose clamp on the parking brake cables, I'm starting to think that you could make a killing with some kind of home journal for guys! |

Ah, oven cleaner as a solvent. It's the same way shooters have been stripping rifle stocks for many decades. Works great on cosmoline-soaked M1 Garand and Mauser 98 stocks. Just remember to use appropriate gloves, eye protection, and something to catch the drippings. Lye is nasty stuff. |
