Post subject:  Opinion on Holley 4106 (8007) power valve change?

Guys,

I decided to jump into Holleys by removing a perfectly functioning Edelbrock 500cfm carb and replace with the 390 cfm Holley 4160, the one numbered 8007.

Now I have a manual 4 speed curb idle of 20 in. hg with a 500 cfm Edelbrock at 750 rpm. I am swapping in a 3 speed automatic 727 torqueflite with a 2000 stall convertor. Dunno if the auto has more "drag" at idle than a manual tranny, thus will lower the vacuum to 16, 18 in. but will deal with that.

Since my Holley books say to use a power valve rated at half the idle vacuum in inches, I was considering a 10 power valve (half of 20)

This is the time to tweak because I had to rebuld the 8007 I got because it was so varnished up. It has the 6.5 2-slot power valve. Whaddaya think, change to 10 or use the new 6.5 that came in the rebuild kit with the blue plates?

Being you are lugging a big truck around with a slant, you'll need to get the power circuit to cut in a bit sooner (so you can jet it a little leaner for cruise and street use)...

Depending on the year of your Holley general consensus on mods for the slant are:

1) Power Valve backfire kit if your Holley is a pre-1993 it will need one (one boom and the PV will be toast)

2) Change the PV to something nicer: usually I start with a 7 or 8 (10 if your cruise vac. is still pretty high...like 15-17)

3) Later as money allows and if your tore it down, spend the money on the secondary quick change spring pod, and a secondary metering block (this way you can dial in the secondaries with the right jets, and with the change of the spring in 15 seconds when you think they need to open up sooner or later...most 'car guys' run either the purple or yellow tall spring)

4) Get an assortment of accelerator pump cams, most of the time you'll be working with the orange 466 cam or the pink 330 depending how stout the engine is (someguys have a nice set up and can get by with the red and white cams).

5) If you have a whopper engine or need more shot, you might need a bigger 'shooter' (I think 25 is stock).

Good luck on the swap.

I have a 10.5 PV, 57 jets, 31 shooters and a blue pump cam in mine. I just swapped the shooters yesterday and went from 25 to 28 then ended up with the 31 I didn't try the 37. The car pulls much harder with the bigger shooter.
Is the orange cam more or less aggressive than the blue one?

Guys,

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I am always so grateful for the resource this forum offers...I feel as if I got ALL the info I wanted and in a form readily digestable. Rob, you made up my mind...after reading my three Holley books and the kinda recent threads by Argentina and the fellow in Missouri I was teetering on buying each of the mods you list..now I am going to order them tomorrow. This carb looks like fun, just as the Eddy was/is. I think the carb is pretty old from the numbers in my books. And Icane... man thanks. nuttin like knowin what folks are dialed in at. And what a super useful Mopar cam resource, it is a valuable to me as Emsvitls advance graphs.

I notice into the side of one of the four throats a casting blemish 5/16 long by 1/4 wide that looks like the crinkled up white part of a fried egg, or like the welds on the aluminum slant manifold. I am toying with making it smooth with epoxy or jb weld...am I wrong and should just leave it alone? I am thinking about turbulence.....

thanks again,

I forgot to add I am using the yellow secondary spring, the second lightest one that came with the quick change kit.

Post subject:  One more thing to note...

If you "are" avidly going to do lots of tuning changes... Holley makes a larger kit...The universal 'trick kit'...37-933...it's kinda spendy, but when you add up what it costs to buy the shooters, gaskets (or buying the $20 rebuild kits, because most places 'don't just have the bowl gaskets' when you need one), pump cams, etc...the price isn't 'bad' for a guy doing tuning (but it doesn't have a 10 PV...but if you have guys running small blocks you can sell off the stuff you don't need too)...I have bought only one of these and over the last couple of years, I still haven't used all the gaskets and things...

FYI,

Hey Rock--

Just out of curiousity why are you making the switch from Edelbrock? How did it work out on your truck?

Collecting info,

Joe

I bought the trick kit and secondary spring quick change kits at the same time from Summit. They were over $100 together but I got a Summit Racing hat in the box as well. Mine came with a pair of 6.5 pv's and a lot of stuff I could not use because the kit is for so many different carbs. I think it is only worth the money if you know how to tune or get the holley carb tuning book.

Rob....THANKS! again, and Daddiojoe and 70valiant.

The reason I am switching carbs is how I got to be a tuner. That plus Ed's threads about recurving...after which I bought a Sun machine to do more distributors a little easier. I can't stop playing with stuff to see what I think of it. The Edelbrock is all I could want out of a carb, really and the ability to swap its parts in and out while leaving the gas in the bowls encourages the tendency to piddle around.

As much as anything I want to see if the 390 cfm carb gives the same performance as the 500cfm. Plus I got interested in the Holley after reading the threads on this forum and having never had one, just wanted to see what I could make one do in my application.

Sounds like a slant six nut, doesn't it! I mean why change out a 833OD you just got working great for a 727 just to see how it goes unless you are a serious piddler!!
