If you had a choice of which head to modify (port, polish, larger valves, shaving the head) which would it be the older drool tube or the newer peanut head? And why? bwhitejr |

Drool tube head: It is lighter, lifters cam be removed without removeing the head, and a greater choice of spark plugs.

I personally prefer the peanut heads. If you get an 81-up hydraulic head you can get the lifters out IF you have a steady hand. That has never been much of a concern to me. If I hurt it bad enough to need a lifter change I pull the motor anyway. I pull it for a cam change too. My car is so easy to get the motor out of I can do it in less time that trying to do it "in car". I am pretty much set on which cam I like too, so again it is not a big issue. I am guessing that if you checked all the real fast cars in the country it probably would be about a 50/50 split between head types. |

before i get roasted, i did search here but 'peanut head' turns up alot of results...and on google its mostly just name calling thats returned. DD what are the differences between the heads? or can you just point me in the right direction to learn this for myself? i'm assuming that peanut refers to the shape of the combustion chamber, drool tube tho sort of has me a little stumped. |

There's a break down of the types and years produced in an article in the articles section of this site. |

Drool tubes have the spark plugs installed in tubes that install from the outside of the head to the spark plug hole. The tubes isolate the plugs from the inside of the engine. |

We have an "Articles" section? I did not know that. Is it part of the archive? Can I get to it from the Forum Index?

so while the drool tube looks easier to work on...the peanut looks like its got a better designed chamber. is one really better than the other? i'll just post pics of her engine and head and her spare engine and head and i bet someone here can tell me which is which and if either are the original to the car. i really appreciate all the help you guys provide, i'm sorry i'm such a noob, this older stuff is at times confusing to me, especially since i dont know all the slang just yet |

The revised combustion chamber started in 1968, in a spark plug tube (SPT or "drool tube") version head, the no tube head cut-in around 1975 so there are a lot of the "better" SPT heads out there. From a performance standpoint, they are all about the same and all the SL6 heads need a good amount of porting work in order to get power out of the engine. DD |

good to know, if she does have that spare engine like shes supposed to be then i do plan on porting it as best as i can, however it'll be the first time porting a head (not my first time using the tools needed). is it true that the intake doesnt need as smooth a finish as the exhaust? i've only read about porting/polishing for port fuel injected cars and have only actually done port/polish work on small 2 strokes.
