I haven't looked at my alternator yet, but how can you tell if your alternator is a Leece Neville or not? Is it printed somewhere on the alternator?

I am wanting to replace some aged belts.

I seriously doubt that it would be. Ive seen it listed in about every parts book Ive ever looked in that dealt with belts alternators or voltage regulators. Unless yours is some sort of ex governmental vehicle (military, some police, etc) I seriously doubt that it would be a Leece Neville. Ive only ever seen 1 vehicle with one and the owner put it on himself because he was a "ham"radio nut. and it wasnt even a Mopar, rather a Suburban.

I just went upstairs and looked at my alternator. Nowhere on it does it say Leece Neville. Actually, I not sure what kind it is. So, I am going to go with the "Except Leece Neville" type belt and see what happens. I guess worse case scenario, I'll have to return it if it doesn't work.

Be advised, the quality, durability, reliability and performance of "remanufactured" alternators from the parts store is quite bad. You can do much better with a brand-new alternator — let me know if you'd like links.

Hello Dan. I'm not replacing the alternator itself, just the belt.

It's charging just fine, the belts just look aged a bit.

But, I'll take all the links you have!

Feel free to email them to me, knuckledown@excite.com

Oh, just the belt? No worries, then, they don't sell "remanufactured" belts (but I bet there are belts coming in from China now...yay...)

The situation is pretty much as Volaredon describes. The Leece-Neville alternators were available for extreme-duty service (police/taxi), but weren't widely ordered. They and their brackets and regulators show up every once in a blue moon on eBay. The L-N alternators are gigantic and look like they came off a city bus!

I have a L/N setup off a 76 Furry cop car. They are huge and have 2 pulleys that require special matched belts.

Never seen one on a slant

This is almost off the topic, but I had an L/N alt on my Kenworth and yeah they are big. Mine took a special belt that was double v, had posts on back that you could wire up and arc weld with. Might be good for off road repairs :)

Unless you have a copcar or some other custom application with a huge electrical system, you won't have a Leece-Neville, but the Leece-Neville is identifiable by the external fan (well, later Chrysler-built 100-amp alternators also had the external fan, but they didn't overlap in model year with the Leece-Nevilles). If its got the usual finned aluminum case with no external fan, its a standard-duty Chrysler.

Are you sure? by '76 that would likely have been the Chrysler 100A unit instead of a Leece. The Chrysler looks like this:

IIRC, the Leece doesn't have the "square" cast-in block with the two mounting holes (one of which is unused in that photo) like the Chrysler does
