| Post subject: | dies while idling all of a sudden/hard starting |
hey all, my 67 dart gt started dying in idle today, neutral or drive, it just goes out, its idling kind of low too, but i didnt mess with the idle screws at all, its a super six, hei, electric fuel pump, been starting hard to, when i first did the hei conversion it was the best starting car ever, just tap the key and bam, and it idled real nice and low, gapped the plugs to 45, just cleaned them and put in new tube gaskets recently, but recently its been starting right away like before but dying instantly, no matter what i do with the gas pedal or if i turn on the pump and let it build up or try to start then hit the pump, so i dont know whats up, i have to crank and crank it and mess with the gas pedal, it only does it when its not hot, but it dies in idle hot or cold, common sense would be to just turn the idle up i spose, but i figure there must be something behind these actions, the hei unit is mounted on alum with heat grease and grounded good, and i bought a brand new one, thanks |

Could be slipped (too retarded) ignition timing, improperly-set idle mixture and/or speed, missing mixture needle(s) and/or speed screw(s), problem with the PCV valve and/or hose, clogged idle circuit...time to get under the hood and start inspecting! |

What coil are you using? Done incorrectly, the mopar coil will burn out when controlled by the HEI system. Did you re-gap the spark plugs after the HEI conversion? Maybe they overheated or fouled due to different conditions. Check all the new wires to be sure nothing just rattled loose. You first guess is very often the right one. You are the one who mentioned the HEI. Good luck |

it didnt die today, but still a little hard starting, i have an accel 12v coil that works good with the hei, ill double check all these things tomorrow hopefully, im running about 30 total timing, that sounded good but maybe ill check that too...and i just put in new spark plug gaskets and while i had those out i cleaned the plugs and its no difference, thanks guys |
