Post subject:  Side Glass Weatherstripping Needs Changing

I bought new felt weatherstrips for my 74 Dart Sport door ferrules (the plastic piece at the top of the inside door where the door lock goes through). They are part number XY43 from Year One. How do you get the old part off? Did Chrysler use staples or screws on the original weatherstrip? This is the inside glass weatherstrip. The original one has a metal piece that runs the length of the ferrule and it appears the felt is attached to the metal piece. The metal piece also has two openings about two inches long - one 6 inches from the end of the ferrule and the other 10 1/2 inches from the other end. Are these openings related to the removal of the felt/metal piece? Is there an easy way to remove/replace?

Nope, the "cat whiskers" or felt is basically snapped onto the door top trim by that "metal piece" - it's just a clamping or friction style grip. Just CAREFULLY pry it off, but don't break the old plastic underneath. I started at one end with an ice pick or very small screwdriver (don't remember) to get under it and start lifting it up. Help it along with a flat screwdriver down deeper in the groove. It'll make sense, once you get it figured out.

The two notches cut in the strip are there to give a little clearance for the two tabs that bolt onto the top of the door subframe. Those tabs also have a felt-type coating and are part of the alignment hardware that helps the window glass roll up properly. The felt is there because they actually come in contact with the glass - don't want any scratches.

The new whiskers we put on Aaron's door trim were mounted with small included screws. It did require drilling holes in the plastic, but the screws hide neatly under the trim.

Thanks Jerry. It went painstakingly slow, but I did it without breaking anything. Here is some information for the next person changing the felt.

The ferrule is thirty something years old and very hard to find a replacement. I soaked it with soapy water and laid the inside of car side face down on a towel. The ferrule is 39 inches long. Not counting the two 2 inch openings at the 6 1/2 and 25 inch marks which are visible with the metal piece still attached, there are indentions on the back side of that metal piece at the 2, 12, 17, 22, 32, and 37 inch marks. There are openings in the plastic lip at those indentions. You can feel those indentions on the metal by running your finger along the back of the metal. The indentions are similar to the impression you make on a plastic lid from a fast food drink cup, except they are triangle in shape. As you slide your small screwdriver between the old felt and the plastic lip the metal is attached to, insert the tip of your screwdriver in the six indentions mentioned above and push on the metal while you gently slide the metal off the plastic lip. Work your way to the next indention gently sliding the metal piece off.

Numbers on that old metal piece/felt are 271-82750. Is this piece available anymore? The new Year One felt has tiny holes for the screws. Do I screw them into the plastic lip on the ferrule or do I reuse the metal piece?

Randy,
It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, doesn't it? Glad you were able to get them off without damaging the plastic door tops. I'm not sure about the replacement whiskers from Year One, because I got mine from elsewhere, but I'll bet they are very much the same. If you didn't get small screws included with yours, get some. Here's what I did:

Using the holes in the replacement felt as a guide, I used an Exacto knife to cut small inconspicuous slits in the lower edge of the felt at each hole location. Prying open the slit, I used small short screws to attach the felt to the plastic lip on the door trim. The screws were short enough to not penetrate completely through the lip. The slits closed up and you couldn't see them. I believe, if you try to reuse the metal strips, you could only attach the felt to them with screws, but the screws would interfere with the plastic lip when you try to snap on the metal strip.

Trust me, once you are done, and the glass is installed, you won't see any difference from the original. While you are at it, you might as well replace the rubber window sweeps on the outside of the glass. For those, you will have to drill small holes into the metal door subframe.

I used the tiny screws that came with the felt piece, had my son hold the new felt tightly in place, and screwed those tiny, sharp screws into the plastic on the ferrule. Took less than ten minutes. I thought I might have to drill in the plastic, but the screws were sharp enough to penetrate it with a little pressure behind the screwdriver. The screws will not be visible once installed on the door. Thanks for your assistance. This car is really progressing.
