I was not surprised Sunday morning when my car suddenly backfired and wouldn't start again. The timing chain had a mile of slop and I knew it. Not too surprised when I could only find one auto parts house with the new set. Was somewhat surprised to find out the same parts house doesn't have the gasket set for a slant six. Then the guy said it was a matter of supply and demand. Now I know why they carry all the parts for both Ford and Chevy. If slants don't break, don't carry parts for them. Anyway, took it all apart got it back together, making a gasket out of a cereal box and mucho pooky. Thankyou to my younger brother for that one. Was surprised when the slant didn't fire up. After checking and re-checking and cussing and re-cussing, my very non-car oriented wife came out to check the progress and to smuggly ask, "What's the problem?" To wihch I answered something like "If I frikkin knew, it wouldn't be a problem. She asked what else would make it not start. I know it really only takes fuel, air and fire. That was it. I removed the cap, bumped the motor and no movement. No sh-- Bart, duh. Not having another suitable distributor on the shelf, I pulled the Mopar Performance dist out of my Dart, put it in and fired it up. We were only 5* off. So, to sum it up, check and re-check first. Oh, now I need to see if I can get a new distributor drive gear, that was the problem. Maybe I can convince my wife that I must get an entire new set up from Mopar Performance.

Gear is still available in the 'HELP' section at Autozone or Pep Boys. MP discontinued the Slant distributor a few years ago. Might get lucky and score one leftover somewhere.

I don't see it as such a lucky break finding an MP distributor. They're not better than stock standard electronic distributors -- in fact, they're the same -- and their advance curves are really poorly suited to street usage, so you have to recurve 'em anyhow.

I didn't know that MP discontinued the slant dist. Good to know. As far as recurving, I think not, as I don't have the specific knowledge. Maybe in the future. BTW, Dan, how's the A/C working out for you? Is it installed yet?
