Ok now Im new to the engine building game but Im currious to know if any of you fellas have done any succesful rering jobs on questionable cylinder bores that produced good results. Im wanting to rebuild my 225 to make a decent runner for a old truck I have. I cant afford more than maybe 6 or 8 hundred on parts and labor I also need to buy and engine stand. The #1 cylinder has a bit more of a ridge than the rest. can I have it honed and replace that piston with a resized or knurled one. I appeciate any replies and opinions |

First thing you need to do is measure the bores to see how far out of round they are. Also, if there is a ridge at the top of the bore that you can hook a finger nail on the block needs bored out. I can almost gaurantee that the #1 needs bored though. I have seen quite a few Slants wear out the #1 worse than the rest. If it is not going to be a daily driver you may be able to get away with cutting the ridge and honing, but it is a real crap shoot. If you do, use cheap cast iron rings. Nothing else will come close to sealing in a shaky bore. What kind of shape is the head in? Bad valve guides will need replaced too or you will still have an oiler no matter what you do with the cylinders. Once you get into the machine work of doing the job correctly, 6-800 bucks won't go far. |

I would look for another slant to swap -- check local papers/web sites etc--- still very common for guys to yank out the slant for v-8 power.. |

thanks for the replies. I have a freind that can get me a discount on machine work at the local napa but until then I have to count on full price A swap seams like a good idea I can get a remaned long block for about 800 at a remanufacurer and I see used engines going for cheap. my friend told me to get it checked at a machine shop and then make my descission he told me his friend would bore and hone it for $10 a hole. whats a realistic price for basic machine work also the engine is a 77 out of an aspen with an automatic the truck is a 78 with an a833od and a 2 barrel if this engine needs a rebore I may just rebuild the truck motor. A goofball with a screw driver messed up the truck motor the original carb wore in the throttle shaft so he turned the mixture screws out to make it run. It ran rich and ruined the motor. |
