Post subject:  Air Cleaner Clearance issue

On my '74 Valiant, I've got an Offy intake mounted, upon which sits a 2" spacer. A 390 Holley sits on top of the whole mess. I have a 3/4" Drop Filter base, and a 2" Open Filter element.

It barely clears the hood. I had to cut about an inch off the carburetor stud. (It won't turn out of the carb body.)

I am trying to go to a cold air intake of some sort.

Does anybody have something similar that they are working with?
Idea's that will fit this application? I was thinking of something with a remote filter element.

2" spacer? Yikes, do those spacers really make that much a difference making it worth keeping?

They make "carb hats" which sit on top of the carb and funnel it to an outlet at a right angle. Then you can plumb it which ever direction you want. The same places that have silicon tubing for cai/turbo stuffs carry them. Check ebay too. I recall them being fairly low profile.

My reaction is the same as Pierre's...why the 2" spacer?

At the last meet at Medford, Glen suggested using a spacer to improve performance. The one I had on hand was a 2" that came off some vehicle from my misspent youth.
I'm thinking about getting something a tad smaller. Perhaps a phenolic. It would certainly improve my chances of finding a filter that will fit.

How 'bout a 3/8" to 1/2" phenolic spacer?

That would likely work fairly well.

What I need to do at that point is get the stud out of the carb. It should unscrew from the body of the 390. It sure doesn't want to budge though.

Two words: Vise Grips.

Been there, reefed on that. It was no go on the stud last time I tried.
I'm worried that I could break the body of the carb by putting any more force on it.
I'm wondering if the PO of the carb did a locktite job. Next time, I buy new.

I finally scored a 1/2" Phenolic spacer. Spending 30 bucks with an internet supplier, then paying another 15 for shipping and handling didn't make any sense.

Carquest $26. Good E-nough.

We'll see if the air cleaner assembly SSDan suggested in a PM will work once I drop the whole mass down a bit.

Should be a busy weekend!

Check if it might be left-hand thread!

I experimented with spacers on my junk with an Offy intake. 1" worked well, thicker than that really didn't do anything else.

I never did any back to back with a 1/2" one though.

1" made the car idle cleaner and crisper, and was actually worth .1 at the track.

Yeah, try two pair of Vise-Grips. Turn one clockwise while you turn the other anticlockwise. That way, you're covered whether it's left- or right-hand thread!

Stop It!

I take it everybody else looked out the window, and now are watching the second hand on the corporate wall clocks as well!

It's too nice to be configuring Analysis Instruments! I wanna go home and work on my car!

Per Woody at Holley Tech Support;

Standard right hand thread. We'll see where I get to tonight!

Slantzilla, thanks for the info regarding the 1" Plate. I get to drive 20 miles tomorrow to pick it up, so might as well get the right one!

I've had excellent driveability with the two inch spacer. One thing I noticed was a tendency for the secondaries to pull in unevenly. Like in steps. It didn't do that before the spacer experiment. Too much volume in the plenum?

Try applying some heat to the stud/bolt with a propane torch, that usually frees up loctite.
