Post subject:  Fuel pumps

Any particular preferences as regards fuel pump manufacterors/sources for a stock carburated 225 circa 1970? Seems to be a wide range of quality with basic replacement parts(pumps, filters, bulbs, switches ect.) these days.Vehicle isn't in regular use but over full crank-case with too thin oil with strong oder of gasoline indicates failing pump? All input appreciated. Thanks.

Well, overly-full crankcase with strong smell of fuel does usually indicate a defective fuel pump, but if your '70 is a California model with the carburetor's fuel bowl vented via a hosepipe to a fitting on top of the fuel filter's body, a grossly flooding carb or a badly defective fuel tank vent can cause the same problem. Most all the slant-6 pumps available today are the same (except for the '70 California + '71 all-states/Canada w/that extra fitting); there's just one company making them and all the brands just buy from that company, as it seems. I'm sure there's extra-cheap junk from China coming in, so do try to stick with a reputable brand. Blackstone or Carter or TRW or NAPA...

Post subject:  Dan and Achille, I have been thinking about another kind

Dan and Achille,

I have recently been thinking about using an in-tank or electric in-line pump . Reason is I'm gonna have stuff off the block to swap cams and if pump is off, now would be a good time to block the pump hole and change pumps.

Now this is a case of fixing what isn't broken if there ever was such a case, but I do that fairly often to see the effect. I haven't found a slant six pump hole plate but could make one easily enough, but wonder if a 318 plate will do as well? And if there is a favored in-line or in-tank pump?

thanks

Y'ask me, electric pumps are a damnuisance to wire up, mount, and set up correctly and safely on carbureted cars.

I believe there are 2 or 3 sizes of fuel pump flanges that cover a majority of engines. The one I used was offically labeld for a jeep 4.0 which I think is also same for a SBC - take a gasket with you and go to auto parts store, in same section where they have the flashy chrome doodadds like hose coverings they usually have these as well.

I put a big block Chevy block-off plate on mine. Fits perfectly.

It seems that American engines from the 1960s used only two different fuel pump patterns: the small block Chevy, and everything else. While other pump parts such as the lever arm were different, the flange design is the same for a small block Mopar, slant six, big block Chevy, or most Fords. I guess they all bought their fuel pumps from the same sources.
