DOH! The pump WAS holding, yeah it had not pumped anything in, uh, I don't know, 5-10 years...(wag)
Then I {OVER?}tightened the belt.
DOH! The pump started leaking from the weep hole.
So I pulled a pump from a motor that did not leak when last run three years ago... installed it... and {OVER?}tightened the belt.
DOH! This pump leaked from the weep hole even worse.
DOH! Have I wrecked both these pumps, or is it worth re-installing and appyling REASONABLE torque to the belt?

P.S.
How do I know when I am applying REASONABLE tension to a V belt?
DOH! Yes, this is far from the first item I have over torqued/ over tensioned/ over pressured/ over driven &/or over turned.

Mopar, cann't believe nobody has answered you yet. Don't even think about wasting your time on a used w/pump unless yer limpin along till payday. New pump, new belt(incase you stretched the peewee out of old one),quality antifreeze and distilled water. Belt should have about 1/2 inch up/down flex midway between pulleys. If you've got any road grime in the pulleys it's a good time to clean em out 8)

I agree with previous poster, new pumps are cheap enough not worth messing with old ones.

I'm guessing the pumps were shot anyway because if you over tightend the pump enough to make it leak you would of probably snapped the belt. Also the seal may of just been dry especially after sitting for so long - maybe after a while of running it would of swelled and sealed, or maybe it just cracked.

I think I may of over tightend my belt as well causing water pump bearing to go fubar - The FSM shows a procedure for adjusting belt tension with a gauge - I just ordered a Napa NBH-KR1 - Gates KRIKIT - I'll let you know how it works.
