I tried a search for the info I am going to be asking but got a funky result so here goes.
What are you guys with Holley 4bbls running for pump cams, jets, and shooters?
I have an annoying bog off idle. I am also experiencing surging at highway speeds.
Right now I have 57 jets, the blue cam in position "2", and what ever shooters came stock.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Phil

I used a box-stock Holley 390 and did nothing but up the main jet size and convert it to a 4150 style with a secondary metering block. Stock pump, cam and shooters. This was on a Clifford intake with a Comp 264° cam, BTW.

Make sure you dont have any vacume leaks. This sounds like it is very lean. If you find no vacume leaks try upping the main jets. First you may want to try backing the idle screws out and see if it speeds up, having them in to far can cause this also.

Well I first went out and looked for a vacuum leak and found one. I was having trouble with the automatic(non electric) choke coming on and creating a bog while just cruising around at normal temperatures. I took it off and added a manual choke. It was still bogging so I figured it didn't have anything to do with the choke.
When I removed the choke it left a vacuum leak from a hole that is now exposed. I put a screw in the hole and It seems to have fixed the problem. I cant go out and give it a good stomping on because it has so much low end that both of the back tires just break loose and she fish tails on these wet roads. I'll up date once the roads dry out.

70 valiant here are the stock specs for that carb.
main jet 57
secondary jet or plate 134-3
power valve 125-85
discharge nozzle ie squiter .025
Secondary spring color green
test the primary discharge nozzle and make sure the primiary diaphragm is working. With the engine off and looking down atthe front of the carb pull the throlthe open fast there should be two jets of fuel flowing fast like out of a squirt gun in to the primarys it should be solid and fast , If this not happening check the prymary diaphragm that could be the bog problem. Thanks Ron Parker :D

Ok, I finally had good enough weather and my wife is home today to get under the hood and do some tuning. It really runs great now. I have settled on the orange cam in position "1", 59 jets and, the purple secondary spring.
It will chirp the tires fom a dead stop and I was duing 110mph following a BMW M3 on the highway.
Now I have to get the 3.91's in there and see if they work now and then get her to Maple Grove and see what she will do in the 1/4.
Thanks for all your help fellas!

I'd rather see you doing 111mph IN FRONT of the BMW M3.
:D :D

Sounds like a great slant powered car!

I rarely speed unless there is someone in front of me that will get caught first. I was doing 60 when he passed me so I got out to follow. He was cruising at 80 and I was about 10 car lengths behind him. When I hit 110 he was about 300 yards ahead of me and pulling away, I hung with him up to about 95.
I only like to go around 90, above that I feel a vibration and the steering gets twitchy.

I guss that came out wrong  .
She used to work on the car with me. She had a pink CarQuest hat that she wore while wrenching. She Knew how to remove the carb and clean the needle and seat on her Chevette. she also swapped the starter on that beast with me coaching. She liked Fast Orange to clean up with afterwards. She said Go Jo smelled bad.
She doesn't drive my Valiant though, she says the Valiant doesn't like her. Plus it is too complicated, you gotta put it in neutral to start it and set the parking brake so it stays where you put it blah blah blah. She does give me all the time I want/need to work on it and enjoy all the results of my labor(racing and cruise nights).
A good woman is hard to find, luckily I found mine young(she was almost 19 AND I was 20 when we wed) and realized it at the time. Now, 17 years later, we are still going strong.
Woah I got a little of topic didn't I?
