Interesting subject matter, of course, but really sloppily written. I quit counting-up simple factual errors — and reading — after the first page. :-(

I dunno, I thought it was very interesting.

DusterIdiot and I talked about the reduced weight of the Cast Crank. Apparently the OE balancer for the cast crank puts a bunch of the weight back into the rotating assembly.

Still, there is some savings there.

Neat build Romeo! I get the impression from the article that this is one of your engines.

Post subject:  Yep, that's Romeo's Engine...

The article was just something to sell copy, the builder actaully popped in here a couple days after the magazine came out and talked about some of what went into the engine and some of the results, bet if you did a search you'd find it pretty fast...

I think Romeo went back to using a carb on that mill at some time, not sure the reason though...

Romeo did not own the F/I system. We talked to him at Vegas when he had the car there. The F/I was $8000 alone.

Also, take that HP gain with a grain of salt. The carb was not tuned to the engine.

Every thing was experimental, and the text was witten in laymans terms as per magazine edit. M.E.W. specialize in Hemi engines and this was the first slant that they ever did. My goal was 325 H.P. with a carb and no power adders. I really wanted them to bore as large as possible but they only went .020. Theory to save the block for future rebuilds. ( remember they are Hemi guys and didn't know that most 225 blocks are free for the taking ). Anyway,, Engine went in a 67 Dart, aprox weight 2800 lbs, 5,000 converter, 4.30 gears, 500 AFB, shifting at 5,800 rpm. Best pass was a 13.60 @ 94 mph @ aprox 4,400 feet. Vegas is not a fast track, I usually run a 1/2 second faster on the tracks back east with better air.
Richard at M.E.W.is a injection nut and wanted to do the E.F.I. on his own.
After with some jetting the engine pulled 308 H.P. with the AFB. I'm sure with a Deamon or a Holley it may run better,, I just like AFB's. I had hopes to some day do a back up story with time tuning on a chassis dyno.
I am just glad that they ran the article as I heard through the grapevine that the publisher almost pulled it because of lack of interest. Later I was told that they had received tons of e-mails thanking them.

I wasn't objecting to the tone of the article, but to its content. The text is full of factual errors about the slant-6 engine. I also wasn't counting the basic spelling errors, 'cause I don't have that many fingers and toes ;-)

But even so, it's a heck of an interesting engine, and evidently a very good-running one.

Personally, I thought the build was great. It sure made more mojo than any slant six I have seen in awail. And I was not about to let some miss spelling or bad wrighting get in the way of good info like this.

I did feel like a little power was left on the table though. Like was meantioned, the small over bore. The extra CID would not been the big deal (although it would have helped) but the bigger bore allowing the head to flow better, plus a better bore/stroke ratio would have made more power. Plus with as sweat a bottom end & head as this engine had, a better cam could have been used & brought the peak up around 6500 rpm. This two things plus a custom built & tuned intake & header setup could have really made this engine shine. But I understand others had input on the build & thought it was a great job anyway.

I bet its a pure joy to drive the way it is. It would have been interesting to see it installed in a car with the EFI & maybe run on E85 fuel & a good 4 speed setup. But all in all, they really showed what could be done with a very simple build. I guess the aluminum rods may have been a bit pricy but still in the end it was a simple build. And that EFI system could be put togther for way less than $8000.00. As a matter a fact I bet there is a company that will put together one that rocks for around $3000.00 to $3500.00 complete with fuel system, intake & ECU. Everything needed to install on the car & make power.

Anyway, nice job & great artical. How about a follow up artical on the car itself at the track with a little giggle juice on top. If there going to continue to have articals like that one & the one with the 383/432 stroker build I intend to get the mag at the house. Yea there you go, how about round two with the Slant Six like they did with the 383/432 build.

Cool project! I'd never heard about a 440 balancer bolting onto a slant six crank nose before - got to make a note of that one.
