http://www.affordable-fuel-injection.co ... ection.htm Has anyone looked into these conversion systems? I'm looking to add some type of fuel injection setup to my turbo car. |

Ok, so I work for a different EFI company, but here are some comments I have on their system. I don't know one way or the other about the quality of their workmanship, but I have a few observations. 1. A TBI on a slant six can have the same mixture distribution issues as a carb. If you are buying one of their systems, the MPFI would likely be much better for performance than the TBI. 2. It appears they use rebuilt GM ECUs. Tuning these requires removable EPROM chips; you can't tune it on a dyno in real time. I'm guessing they'd probably load it with a Syclone file for initial work. 3. I see they're using a GM HEI setup for ignition control. The Lean Burn slant six distributor has a pickup that's compatible with the computer controlled HEI. |

From my perspective, I probably would not bother with TBI with a turbo. You really should have a dry manifold system (MPEFI) to best work with a turbo. The real advantage over a carb, is that you can tune your TBI with a laptop in real time (which you can with this system?). If you cannot control tuning yourself easily, then definitely forget it. I didn't see a price, but I would advise not spending more than $600-800 on a TBI system. It takes about $1000 or more to DYI a MPEFI system with megasquirt. Lou |

I came across that site and thought it was sort of interesting. If I do the fuel injection I will use the megasquirt controller. I have read sections of the megamanual and I'm not sure if I dedicate the time and effort towards a FI conversion. Just seems a little difficult and confusing. I can get with Greg Ondayko and maybe work on our projects together because he lives only 25 min away. I think he is going to start his soon. My blow thru setup works well with a carb but does have some issues and draw backs. Has a slight rough idle at a stand still and the exhaust fumes at idle will just about knock you out. Gives me a headache everytime I drive the thing, but it has to stay that way to deliver enough fuel under boost. It is time to step it up to the next level or I think I will remove the turbo and just run a super six. |

FYI - you can program the GM systems "live" - they make special programmers that replace the rom chip entirely. You remove the rom, plug this device in its place, plug your device into your comp, and go at it. IIRC the price for such a beast was in the $100-200 range. I haven't been in the GM scene for a while but I believe the software was fairly painless. At the time I was looking at it, for the price of this fancy programmer and the hassle, I was already at the price of a basic MS system. I also vote for MS MPFI - you'll kick yourself later for not doing that from the start. I started out with a GM TBI, progressed to MS TBI, now MS MPFI. |

Well, if you have any Megasquirt questions, don't hesitate to ask them here. We've got several Megasquirt people on the forum, myself included. There may be a revamped MegaManual out sometime in the near future, too. |

Are you hinting at a more basic, easier to get started with MS manual? Maybe a companion to the MegaManual called the MiniManual???

The megamanual can be daunting at first glance but once you dig into it, its not that bad. All its options and tuning variables can be dizzying, but once you get accustomed to it you will be glad you had the flexibility. You don't have to read it word for word, but glance over it at least so you know whats there and where it is, because chances are as you go along your gonna have a question and then go oh yeeeea it was in that section. Probably a good idea too - don't put it on your daily driver that you expect to take to work the next day |

I agree with Pierre's statements about trying a bit harder to read the megamanual before giving up. Use the internet to look up unfamiliar terms (google or wikipedia are great). I would say that if you are really put off by the megamanual, then you may not want to try putting the MS EFI system on your car. This is not a plug'n'chug or bolt on system. Lou |

No system will be plug and play, even the GM one. You'll be looking through FSM's for wiring diagrams at least. Don't expect a GM system to be install and go just because it worked flawless on another car. Excellent documentation is a good thing once you take the time to understand it, not a bad thing. Ask Sam, he uses the accel system and on more then one occasion lack of documentation for it hindered him. |

You are absolutely right. The Mega Maual was bedtime reading for months when I was using the MegSquirt system. There was nothing you could not figure out from it, and if you need help, the MS forum is top flight. When I went with Accel, the lack of this rich documentation was frustrating beyond words. It is far better to have too many words, than not enough. The current MS system has better features than the old one. I switched to Accel for features not on the old one, mainly timing and idle control. While the Accel is still more sophisticated than the newer MSII, and now works well, I would not recommend the Accel EFI to anybody that did not have experience, or good solid advice from someone who has Accel experience. For DIY MEga Squirt would be hard to beat. The EFI thing is absolutely the way to go with a turbo. I think it would be really hard to get the flexibility you need out of a carb. Make no mistake about it though. It is a big job. Just don;t try to do it over night. You eat an elephant one bite at a time. Sam |

Try this link www.kalmaker.com.au/ I have had a memcal made for my Slant conversion it works great. You don't have to buy all their software they will make a chip for you. http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/ ... w/8d7c?b=8 |
