Post subject: Rookies engine build has begun

ok so I am immediately rebuilding a 225 because my 198 slant six took a crap on me out of left field.I adjusted the valves twice a week or two ago so i could get them nice and tuned but i noticed a rattle if i held a certain rpm i thought i just misadjusted an intake or exhaust valve so i kept tinkering couldn't get it to go away, so put it back together and went about my day. Then a few days later on my way to Bradenton Raceway to meet/or race Charllie,Don,Cathi. The car was running smooth and felt some more power from the valve adjust but about half way there I could here that rattle from inside the car so i turned off into a gas station and sure enough a nice banging or hammer on steel sound starts so i've been told and am pretty sure I've spun a rod bearing or worse. Anywho I have a 225 junkyard motor i bought that i'm going to start tearing into tonight i'll update they drove it into the junkyard so i'm gonna see what i gotta fix/replace and i'm purchasing a cam and stall converter.
P.S. How do i post pictures?
I'll let everyone know the situation and ideas for the engine. any help is appreciated.
Kevin

Make sure to harvest the rods from the 198. They are in great demand.

Ok so heres some picks last night just unbolted a pile of crap to my surprise I think i may have bought a junkyard motor that is rebuilt considering new gaskets, new freeze plugs looks like and the valve train is beautiful. So heres the plan everytihng on my 198 such as

going on the 225 i'm going to purchase a erson cam (help me choose please?) 3000,rpm stall converter then the list will grow when i get it apart.

kev,
Your first attempt to post pictures did not work. Just simply use this format:

For instance...

Good luck,

Thanks jerry ya I was like darn picked the wrong one but i figured out to use that img one.
Alright so i believe i'm ordering the 270adv duration erson cam tommorow
a 3000,rpm edge converter also. I'm gonna clean everything up and pull my current engine out bolt on all parts to new engine after i figure if i'm gonna try for some higher comp pistons or just be satisfied with a head shave.

Does anyone know what kind of compression just shaving the head .100 with give i have a 64 motor so i believe thats 8.4:1 compression stock.

Ok so i ordered the erson 270 duration cam but on the 108lobe so i should have some more rump. now i got a problem edge converters is telling me for the 3000,rpm stall converter it's gonna cost $500 they told me 300 last time but i suppose he was speaking of the mild converter help quick i gotta call him back any other converter choices?
My idea was order like a 5000rpm v8 stall converter would that work? would that give me 3000rpm stall? give or take a bit please help more pictures coming tonight took head off the rebuild engine

Best to get a converter set up specifically for your engine. Midwest converters can make you one with 3000 stall for about $400 shipped. Search them on the web.

Maybe you could ask them about getting the most stall that is realistic in the lower priced size? I don't see that you need a 3000 stall with that cam. When I was looking at using that cam I was thinking 2400 stall for a street car.

I would not even think about trying to use some other High stall v-8 converter. Besides, a real 5000 stall converter for a v-8 that is not junk should cost more than $500.00 anyway.

Tom at Erson has a slant with that cam on the standard 110 centers, He will tell you about what converter he is running if you ask. I forget the details but he is happy with it. I think they only have 2.76 gears in it too.

It is better to put in a little more stall, especially with a Slant. I drove many miles on the street with a 3500 stall, and a few with a 3800. It is no big deal. You will not even notice it until you stand on it. :D

Does Midwest or Continental or any other converter shop make a high stall converter for the early ('62) engine/transmission?

I'm gonna guess that Midwest will. If nothing else they should be able to modify a stock converter for more stall.

See now thats why he had to up me to the high performance converter instead of the mild since i got the early small pilot crank he said if he used the mild converter it would get to thin b/c he'd have to fix it for the 64 engine and it would leak or possibly break.Basically moral of the story a little under 500bucks to my door hopefully my dads phrase comes in handy "you get what you pay for" if i'm not happy with it or if it is a piece of junk i could always send it back we'll see i feel positive about it though sorry no pictures didn't have time tonight got off work late and gotta write an obituary about myself for philosophy.
Next question I was debating with my friends dad about shaving he head .100 (he's familiar with v8's same with my dad) he thinks .100 will cut in the water jacket (yes no?) and i need to double check clearances with valves because the cam may bring the valves to close or hit the pistons are these gonna be an issue with a slant six
I was always told the head has plenty of metal on it.
Thanks Kevin

Midwest made mine for the small pilot crank, but the later big spline 904. $30 extra over their regular price.

Kev, why do you have a small pilot crank if your motor is a 74? Have another core you're working with?
