I have a 74 dart with a holley 1945 carb which I would like to change. From a limited amount of searching on this site it seems a carter bbs one barrel is my best bet. Is there a specific model number and what sort of mods will I have to make. Also, are new ones available and where or is it best just to find an old one somewhere and rebuild it. Any advice appreciated. vic

Hold on........ Doctor Dodge suggested that I set my 1974, 1945 Holley aside and try a good, newer version of the 1920 Holley. My old 1945 had been rebuilt many times and really needed some new bushings. It had some bad vacuum leaks.

I bought (4 carbs) off eBay and got lucky with an Economaster version. This carb really woke up my car. It has a few mods to make it even better, but with this carb I can break loose the P235's just about any time I want (I have a new 2.76 ratio, 8 3/4 posi) plus it gets good mileage. When I am done with the mods it will probably do better on mileage.

The 1920 is a super simple carb to work on and rejet in about 1.5 minutes. So the good Doctor is right on! :)

Ted,

DD and slant six dan ARE right on! They gave me the confidence to get to where I am now...but IMHO you reallly outgha try a 4bbl if you are in any kind of engine up grade. For starters, I have an Economaster 4bbl that will knock your socks off til you go for wilder stuff...I am not trying to sell you one, just alert you to 4bbl Economaster existence...PM me if you want some 4bbl Economaster hints. Now that I have settled on a Holley 8007 made up to a 4160 (THANKS, Rob,) I am gonna unload my carbs bought and tried from 2 through 4 bbls. IMHO you need to try stuff for YOUR needs and make up YOUR mind as to carbs. I could never live with a 2bbl now, but I am "built" for a 4bbl angling for blow=in turbo.
