Post subject:  Hei question

I am going to go with the hei ignition. I see at my ballast resistor there are two wires in and two out. On one side there are two black wires and the other there are a blue and brown. Whe doing the hei swap does it matter which ones connect to which? Obviously one side to the other, but does anything else matter?

You have a single ballast resistor with a total of two electrical terminals, and not a dual ballast resistor with four terminals...right?

If so, simply remove the two plugs from the ballast resistor and connect them together.

O.K., I have done the conversion, now the car sounds great, but dies as soon as I put it in gear. What could the problem be? Timing light is kaput.

Chances are the distributor pickup polarity is backwards and the timing is retarded. Try switching the wires from the pickup.

Thanks for the help guys, I am going to get a new timing light. I think I am wasting my time otherwise.

O.K. I gave it a rest for a couple of weeks. I reinstalled the electronic distributor and module according to the instructions. Timing was set at 10*. All was well, put it in drive and took it for a spin. After about 1/2 mile I stopped to turn around and the car dies. Put it in park and it starts up, dies when I put it in drive, first, second or reverse. I limp home, check the timing, its still at 10*. I gave up and put the point dist back in for work tomorrow. What the heck is up with this? I tried reversing the dist wires at the module, did not get any better. Last time I tried the swap I couldnt even get it in gear without it stalling. Got to take it for a drive this time.

Another guy with HEI problems? I knew I wasn't the only one.....
Never stressed enough: Check all ground points, and run a ground wire or three if you have to. That HEI has to have ground, and it has to be cool, as in never so hot you can't touch it. I mounted mine on a 1/2" aluminum block. It'll drive you crazy, lemme tell you. I got a bad module(don't buy the chepo units) then after many hours of lethargic frustration, I discovered that my "new/reman" dizzy was bad. Sizzle... Went back to the store, and ordered another one. Second time was a charm, as I got a good dizzy PLUS a very short-slot governer. :D
Don't let it drive you crazy, check the basic junk first, then keep digging.
Good Luck!

Be sure to put the correct thermal gel on the bottom of the module before mounting as well. You can buy a small tube of it at Radio Shack.

Just for fun, have that module tested. You can get that done free at most large chain auto part stores Kragen, Checker, Autozone etc.

Cheers
