put the engine in last night. got everything hooked up, and it wont start. the starter turns, its getting gas, but im getting 0 spark out of the distributor. i have a pertronix flame thrower ii coil in it along with the pertronix ignitor system. i put my test light on both sides of the coil and it lit up both times. i pulled a spark plug wire and plugged it directly into the coil to see if it would fire a plug at all, no go. i think i have a bad coil, anyone else have thoughts on it?

You need to do a thorough analysis of your ignition system.

You can always just go to the slant pile and get a stock coil to try....but I think 12v on both sides of the coil is not so good.

+ side should be steady on, - side should flash when the engine is turned over on the starter. :D

- side could possibly be steady on when the motor is stopped, depending on where the trigger is at.

I had a petronix fail on the road once. I went back to points and will never use anything else again.

did you use a good amount of the lube. If not they dont work sometimes.

lube? what kind of lube are you talking about, and where should i put it? i still have a set of new points somewhere. i dont think i have a ballast resistor for it though. with the pertronix ignition it said i could bypass the resistor. if i put the points back in it, can i run it for a short period of time without the ballast resistor?

ok, i got it running. turns out the rocker arms were adjusted way too tight for the new cam and lifters i put in it. the valves werent closing all the way so i was getting 0 compression. i only let it run for about 20 seconds, but i noticed that my oil pressure guage was still sitting at 0 psi. i checked the sender with my test light and its getting juice. how long do you have to run the /6 before it gets pressure? mind you this is my first start up on a newly rebuilt motor. does it just take a bit for the oil pump to build pressure?

It can take a while. I always turn a new motor over without plugs in it until the motor builds pressure. Then start it. :D

i unplugged the coil wire, then cranked it over for a good 45 seconds. then i decided to unscrew the oil filter to see if there was oil in it, and there was an audible pop (like when you pop a bottle of champagne) and oil came out. then i unscrewed teh oil galley plug on the passenger side of the engine to see if there was oil in the galley, and oil started to come out there. to me that would indicate oil pressure. my oil pressure sending unit might be bad i guess. i have the valve cover off, and after cranking on it, i still dont see oil coming out the top of the rocker arms of course i didnt crank it that long. should i pull one of the rocker arm retaining bolts and see if oil comes out of there? any suggestions?

i pulled all the plugs, blocked the carb wide open and disconnected the coil wire and tried to crank it over to see if it got pressure. still 0 on the gauge. then i pulled the back bolt on the rocker arm rail, and cranked the engine over. oil spurted out. its a brand new oil pressure gauge and sender. here is the gauge i bought
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku
while it wasnt a big squirt coiming out of the bolt hole, it was more like a gurgle. this means im getting oil pressure right? is my sender just bad?
