hi sages- having seen and owned many sl6 vehicles since they started in 60, i have historical questions for the top sages. i have an 80 volare with an sl6, dual cats and an air pump, i am gradually restoring. it was the first sl6 i think with dual cats and an air pump. the sl6 continued in at least 82 and 83 in furies, diplomats and i think mirada cars and then in dodge pickup trucks through 87 when sl6 production ended. did sl6 production from 80 to the end in in 87, car and truck include dual cats and air pumps or was that just a one year thing in 80? pickup trucks go by different standards than cars. so im wondering if 81-87 sl6 trucks got away with no dual cats and no air pumps. thanks for enlightening me bob fisher

The emissions equipment and its configuration varied with model, year, transmission, carburetor type, and emissions package (US 49-state low altitude, US high altitude, California, Canada, Export). Dual cats were used on some emissions packages starting in the late '70s. Is there some modification or performance-related question you have in mind?

hello dan- this volare wagon is a low mileage car that originated in connecticut, so it isprobably the common package us49 state. it has a rare for its model and year, 3spd manual floorshift which i think was not available in california due to emissions req. i saw 78s and 79s with the 4spd od and they did not have the two cats and air pump.. the car was in storage for a long time and has only 69k miles. eventually the exhaust system will rust out and my plan is to eliminate the first cat up by the side of the engine and the air pump. fla doesnt have inspection like nj who would fail automatically every old car for smog and then expect you to expend 500 fat ones for repairs. its silly because the old cars would be pipe tested at idle not on a dynamometer like the new cars and po guys would lean the carb down and lower the idle to the point where the car would hardly run and it would pass. if you flunked the test, then you couldnt repair it yourself and had to go to a state certified emissions clip joint garage. in any event my thinking is whether i can copy and get parts for the single cat system like in my 77 aspen wagon or from a later model like the fury or diplomat or a pickup 80-87. let me know what you think about my thinking hereto. incidentally my uncle moe says forget about it since most furies and diplomats had 318s and different exhaust systems. the 77 aspen wagon exhaust may only be available at clip joint prices. not a pretty picture. thanks bob f

Hey Bob, Ive had an 80 Aspen, 2, 80 Volares and an 80 Lebaron wagon.
The Aspen and 1 Volare had a single cat, the other 2 cars had both cats. My dads 82 Fury had dual cats. None had any version of Lean burn. All had the 4 or 5 pin Mopar elec ignition... saved me the trouble of conversion!

I have seen trucks with a cat in the head pipe. You can always get a piece of rebar and a hammer and modify the inside of the cat.
