| Post subject: | oil routing thru filter? |
Hi, I've been 'plumbing' my front-engine dragster oil system (remote Oberg filter) and I've got a question about the routing of the oil through the pump/filter. Does the oil enter the filter at the outside edge and return (cleaned) through the center? Or vise-versa? My filter base has been modified such that there is a 3/8 Npt fitting where the oil hole intersects the 'outer ring' of the filter, the center hole is blocked off, and the passage that extends rearward from the center hole also has a 3/8 Npt fitting. Everything seems to be OK, but I want to ensure my "in-out" lines are hooked to the filter correctly. I can take the pump off and check, but it's probably not worth the effort. What's it take to pre-oil a slant? I have the V8 preoil shaft, but I've never had a slant apart. thanks in advance, mark mldingba@collins.rockwell.com |

The oil always flows from the outside to the inside. I suspect that's because of any resistance/restriction the element may cause by thick oil or debris clogging the filter will cause the element to push inward against the perforated metal screen and support the paper element. If the oil flowed the other way (inside to outside) the paper element would probably rupture and allow dirty oil to get through. Ever take apart gasoline filters? They always flow from outside to inside too. cfield@ll.net |

It is a good idea to use a "stand pipe" in the center hole, with or without a check valve. To prime a SL6, fill the filter full of oil and screw it on right before you go to start it, then crank the engine on the starter (ignition off) untill the pressure "hits", then fire her up. DD |

Thanks for the info...I guess I've had plenty of filters apart and they all flowed outside-in, just never thought of this problem in quite the same way. I was more concerned about how some filters use a 'check valve' to keep the filter full. thanks again, mark mldingba@collins.rockwell.com |
