Post subject:  turbo questions

Hey there

Willing to go turbo (blow thru, 4160 holley, all goodies)

this are my prospects:

complete turbo assy out of a '99 mitsu GST Eclipse (intercooler, lines and all) (40k miles, good, excellent condition)

Garret T04E item # 466646 5041S (NIB)

Garret TBO227 (used, condition unknown)

Garret GT22V (NIB)

Garret AR 5.0 (used, condition unknown)

don't know nothing about those, other than that. I'll have plenty of time to study and learn, I do need to close the business on buying the turbo like NOW.

Somebody with proper knowledge can tell me what would you think is the best option? willing to turn my car into a Fierce street driver (pavement ripper) setup, A833 trans, 3.31 rear end ratio, etc.

I'd hit the tracks once I get it all sorted out, just to feed my baby with some small block meat.

I am not sure on some of those, like the TO4E & that A/R5.0. But my guess is they are all way to small. That Mits turbo is way,way to small.

How much are you looking to spend on a turbo, Master Power is very close to your neck of the woods (I think) and they have some fairly good turbos at good prices (around $500.00 to $600.00 US). The MP turbo's are made somewhere in Brazil.

If there is no other turbo's you can get in your area, or the budget is holding you back, one of the TO4E turbos would be my guess on which one. I would guess that if they are all off of factory cars that run gas, just get the biggest one in the best shape. Now if they are something off a diesel engine then they may be getting a bit to big.

If you can get the measurements of the compressor wheels & the exhaust wheels then I would no more about what they are. Or even some pics could help.

t04E (from a ford truck, 6 cil, 3 lilters or so displacement
http://www.deremate.com.ar/accdb/viewIt ... I=17368889

gt22v also from a ranger power stroke engine
http://www.deremate.com.ar/accdb/viewIt ... I=18056567

mitsu complete setup (that eclipses don't have like a 3 liter engines??)
http://www.deremate.com.ar/accdb/viewIt ... I=18114172

goals are low rpm boost range as wellas power, don't wanna get boost starting at 3500 rpm!

those T4 based garrets have like 36 mm intake side / 40 mm ex impellers.

What would be a good impeller sizes for a slant?

The Eclipse was a 2 liter engine in turbo trim. Later Eclipses used a naturally aspirated 3 liter V6.

A 3 liter diesel turbo is going to be way too small - unless you want your slant to have the same redline as a 3 liter diesel, which is often around 3,000 RPM or so.

Yes every one of those turbo's are way to small. And way to much money also.

Something like this is what you need, although they dont have the picture on this listing.

Or this one is a ball bearing version about the same size and it would spool with even a stock torque convertor. Just for something to go by, the picture of this turbo shows the one with the 3" inlet & you can see that the wheel is very close to that (well 61mm is the wheel size). This turbo will spool quick plus not chock the engine and cause problems. It will also make very good power even at 10lbs of boost, plus could be turned up to 30lbs.

To use the ones you listed you would need two of them & run twins, and that just to much work & money.

those prices are in AR$ wich is 3 to 1 compared to US dollars.

I have those small turbos (the ford trucks engines aren't diesel engines! those are 3liters turboed gas engines, they run on premium) and one 12 liters diesel BIG truck turbo... heheheh I guess that would be too large :wink:schwitzer model 4LGZ

i know some people, including some 4 bangers, are using holset turbos off of dodge diesels. some of them have smaller exhaust(Hy vs Hx) might not be ideal spooling, but is a decent price alternative. im planning on using a Grand National turbo(231ci) at first on my build

I'm a bit startled that Ford would have built a 3 liter turbo gas engine for their Ranger, but in that case, it might be a safer choice. I'd just ass-u-me-d that it was a diesel.

how do I measure them and what kind of sizes should I be after? I mean, should I measure impellers casings? impellers? wich size in/ex? I can asemble an hybrid. I have a guy that has tons of turbo stuff and he owes me money. I want to put an end to this so I thought what the heck I'll go turbo then.

Another thing: for starters, are forged pistons an absolute must? my current motor has less than 20k miles... well, maybe I cna replace just the pistons???

I guess I just want to buy a turbo that would allow me to acquire experience and maybe after I blow up this engine in the process of larning I can start fresh, but qould like to keep the turbo I used.

Also, what type of intercoolers should one use? air/water? air/air ??

is there any place where i CAN buy a "hat" for my 4160 or do I have to build my own?

I think a holset hy35
will be good for a slant

I just got a hy35 that that thing is huge! will be used on a 2.8 liter engine
lots of people used them with good results even on smaller engines
goes up to 35psi

I also have a h1c holset which is smaller
