Uh, no. The pieces I made will go inside a plenum. I found that auction though. Looks like it could work really well. |

Yes, the rusty chunk of 2.5" bar stock pictured is the die for forming the 1.75" OD 16 gauge tubing. I used a friend's 30 ton press and didn't have to work it too hard, but there is some pressure involved. I polished the radius on the die and applied a little grease to make things as easy as possible. I might make another die and taper the entire length of the velocity stack as well as form a radiused entry on the end. I'm just not sure my friend's old chop saw will survive cutting another piece off the 2 1/2" solid bar.  I made my first tapered runner tube today, but had to get to work (swing shift) before taking any pictures. I also started roughing out the manifold flange. Right now it's just a big chunk of 1/2" plate with 6 round holes in it. Hole saws don't seem to like cutting through steel thicker than the teeth are tall. It was alternating between binding up and having so many chips under the teeth it wouldn't cut. I found that using a vacuum to clear the chips as I drilled/cut worked quite well. More to come as things progress! |

See the difference in the tubes? It's subtle, but it's there. The plate is 1/2" as that's the thickness of the original manifold flanges. This is just the beginning of the intake flange. The ports will be rectangular and the flange will be cut and trimmed into six individual flanges like a stock manifold. There will be very little of this big @$$ plate left on the finished product.

I thought of something earlier. I'm not going to cut my my big plate into five individual plates after welding up the runners and plenum. I think I'll make a jig out of the plate to locate individual runner flanges. This way I won't have to start from square one if I decide to make another manifold. Doing so will make shaping the flanges easier since they will be much smaller and lighter. I just wish I had a vertical band saw. Actually, I wish I had a horizontal band saw too, but I really don't know where I'd put either.  I did get the other 5 runner tubes tapered, welded and smoothed. I even had visions in my head of polishing the tubing and having the finished product chromed, but I'll save the bling for another project. The Valiant is to be a clean, but bare bones performance car. |
