Post subject:  which alternator???

i am gathering parts for my slant into a 40 plymouth project. i have 3 engines, 2 transmissions, but no alternator yet.
it appears that they used several different alternators through the years.
what would you guys recommend as a good alternator/regulator setup for the car. are they all interchangable? looks like i will be using the 1966 engine and brackets, so i will need one that will go on there.
in theb past i have liked the g.m internal (1 wire
0 setups on my chev. engines, and would prefer to stay with something on that order in the mopar line.
any feedback will be appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Chuck

All the Mopar alternators are externally regulated. Same general housing style and same physical fitment from '60 to '87, with minor differences not affecting physical interchangeability in '62, '70, '72, and '79. Regulation system is '60-'69 vs. '70-up. The '70-up alternators are easier to find these days and the regulation is superior. '70+ alternators can easily be used with pre-'70 regulators. Here is a brand new one from a reliable vendor.

'89+ Mopars use Nippondenso (smallest/lightest), Bosch, or Chrysler (largest/heaviest) alternators, all physically interchangeable. All compatible with '70+ regulator. Minor bracket mods permit this alternator to be mounted on earlier brackets.

can i use the newer style
1970-89) electronic regulator with the older 60's early 70's alternator?
thanks,
Chuck

No, that's a direction you can't go; you have to use the '60-'69 type regulator with a pre-'70 alternator. But, there are electronic regulators for the early applications. The good ones are NAPA Echlin VR-1001 and Standard-BlueStreak VR-128.

dan,
that was a great link. although the alternator issue is a long way from now, i'll have time to hash it over. i like the adapter that is out there from that link to install the delcotron on the car. guess i can't completely get the g,m blood out of me, as i hane worked with those for years. they are reasonable price, and the 1 wire hookup really cleans up the engine wiring.
thanks again

I wonder if it would be worth trying using my original '66 regulator with my new Bosch alternator, or is this taking the swapping a bit too far?

A '70 alternator can be used with either type of regulator. If you use the '60-'69 type regulator, you connect one (either) of the alternator's two field terminals to ground. All Chrysler alternators through '71 use pressed-in diodes and the rear housing is rounded in profile. Starting in '72 they used screwed-in diode trios in a squared-out portion of the rear housing; these are referred to as "squareback" alternators.

I'll be fitting in a 120 amp alternator from a '89 pickup. Already swapped on the pulley and ground down the bracket, just need to wire it up correctly.

A good-quality ordinary '70-up regulator will work just fine.

Thank you; I thought it might be a good idea to ditch the points-type regulator.

Well, even a points-type regulator would run that alternator if you picked a sturdy enough version of the points-type regulator (NAPA Echlin VR-34 or VR-35). But yeah, better to go to the '70+ unit.

Post subject:  Ammeter....

Are you going to run an ammeter or voltage gauge?

It gets tricky running the ammeter with higher output alternators........
