Post subject:  Oil Drain Plug Leak

I'm changing oil for the first time on the new to me 1979 D-100 225. The plug that is in it,is a 1/2 inch self tapping bolt with a copper washer. It is not stripped. Would a white nylon washer (instead of copper) be better? Or the self tapping "piggyback" drain plugs? Or the plugs that look like a baby bottle nipple. What has worked for you? Thanks.

I really like the later factory plugs with the thick, rubber-over-phenolic washer moulded onto the plug. P/N 6035 417 from the dealer.

Called the dealer here in Brantford, ON they want almost 15 bucks for one. Do you have source that might be cheaper. I've seen them on the net for 3 bucks US. So about 1.50 CDN LOL!!!!

You friendly with any of the repair shops in town? If you know one that won't mark up price of parts ask them to order it from the dealer for you so they get "their" price instead of just list price.

If your friendly enough with the parts guy at the dealer they can make you your own account so you get the special price.

just call the dealer back and tell them you were just quoted list whitch is $6.20 from another dealer and if they tell you to go their and get it tell them they are closer and you need it right now they should cave in

or you could tell them you are from _____'s shop and you need this part # and most of the time they will give you wholesale price. most dealer's just have a genaric function on the comp that will give wholesale price to new customers.

Two factors are at work here:

1) Dealer parts counter profiteering. Nothing new here...once you establish a good working relationship with a friendly and coöperative parts manager, you're all set to go, but until then, you're at the mercy of whoever decides to mark up retail parts sales as high as possible. Sometimes it helps to give the guy a plausible excuse for giving you a discount. "Toronto Chrysler offers shop pricing on cash account for members of the International Slant-6 Club, but I'd rather buy locally. Will you offer the same discount?".

2) Many items are still priced as though the US/Canadian dollar exchange were opposite the way it is now. The Canadian Dollar is worth about $1.10 US , but I was finding prices of $9 to $12 apiece when I went shopping in Canada yesterday for a certain fancy NGK spark plug. I found prices of $5 to $8 apiece from US sources, so I wound up ordering them through RockAuto.

But truth to tell you, even if my choices were "pay $15" or "don't get this kind of drain plug", I'd pay the $15. It really is that much better than anything you can get on the aftermarket, and it's pretty much a one-time-ever purchase.

Don't forget shipping charges kill you when buying one small value piece thru mail order.....................

I try to maintain a list of things that I don't need right away, then add them to mail-orders on big items so the incremental shipping cost is insignificant........ (also useful with there's a certain cost value to get free shipping)

Was across the border today and dropped into one of the Chrysler dealers in Niagara Falls. They had one 6.00 plus tax. NAFTA at it's best.
