Post subject:  ignition swicth goin out? tips?

so my ignition switch is goin out(key) it will keep power to the coil when i crank it, but when it fires and i let off it kills power to ignition.
so to drive it ive been taggin a wire from the alt to the powerside of the coil, and takin it off to kill the motor. even though i prolly should wire to ballast resistor.
i know these bastards have probs with voltage regulation, charging, and in dash amp meter, but didnt think this was one. any tips on replacment or knowledge of burnt connection locations?

These "bastards" do not "have problems" by design with voltage regulation, charging, or ammeters. Usually issues only crop up in these areas because of neglect, abuse, and/or bad-quality parts.

I take it you have checked to make sure your ballast resistor isn't causing the problem?

Tips on replacement may be forthcoming once we know what year and model you're working on.

ha, sry, didnt mean to upset u dan... jk. anyways, this is a 72 valiant. havnt checked the ballast resistor, figured it was fine since i get power to my coil on crank.. also figured it was ignition switch from summer woes when the ignition switch wouldnt kill the car and ide have to cyle the key a few times to get it to shut off...
ill check ol ballast though

The ballast resistor is bypassed during cranking. "Fires when cranking but dies when key released" is the classic symptom of a dead ballast resistor. Suggest you check the ballast resistor and buy the three books described in this post

good to know. but during these fault times, everytime i checked the ballast i could never get a 12v to 0v reading. and evertime ive poked around it will work again. once with ballast resistor wiring and once on starter relay wiring. im almost thinkin connector faults.
so power goes from.... batt-starter-starter relay- ignition switch-then back to starter relay and ballast resistor- then to coil?

so last night was crazy ignition times.

i go to leave to go han out downtown... no start, hotwire and go, no time for diagnostic.
theonly thing is that my subs keep commin on and off, i eventually pull over to mess wit amp wire to get subs back, i end up moving my big power wire that goes from batt to starter out of the way of mire other wires... and then my idle went up a lil and my subs came back...
sooooo ummmmm... how is my power wire inducing voltage when there isnt a huge draw from it.

Mebbe ur pwr wirez don't like ur choice of music. PWN3D!

Whenever "subs" and "amps" come into the picture, it's a pretty good bet the car's electrical system has been hacked, brutalised, and overloaded. You've been given the info you need. If you choose to hang out downtown instead of fixing your car, and you choose to guess instead of checking, there's not a whole lot of additional help we can give you.

Check the key-on power wire through the bulkhead. It should be blue. Also check the flat plastic connector from the steering column to the harness. It may have a corroded/burnt connector in it. Knowutimsayin? :D

Hi Just have to chime in and read it all it is relatedx

This morning - on the way to sort out my 68 cuda's papers - DOT swapped engine and chassis numbers - when I tried to do the transfer to my name the first time they said there is a duplicate chassis number - I mean GOOD grief this bird was registered 01 01 1968 SO to make a long story short

This morning I went for Registration - who sent me for police clearance - (swapped the numbers back) who send me to licensing who send me to road worthy and.........................................

She does not want to start

Out comes the multimeter to trace the fault

Turns out it was the Valet chaps who got water into the bulkhead connector

You know the big one.... cleaned the contacts got her up and runnig with the RWC inspectors looking on smiling

And she passed first time

At last after months on my name

I am doing the bulkhead bypass mod tomorrow geez it was embaresing

well i put the stero in and its clean, not really hacked, i got the power wire right on the batt terminal, remote wire by itself and cd player hooked up to oreginal stereo wire. i havnt had any time for dianostic on this thing. and ide rather hott wire real quick and go party downtown then sit by myself and trace all the wires. i am also telling you my story in case something clicks with you guys, ya know like known weak connectors... and the bulk head idea is a great one...

and i got to brag and say i got a free 73 dart wit a 318 in perfect shape today, muhahahahah
