Post subject:  71 Dodge Demon, Running really rough at idle.

Hello All,

My 71 slant six was running great and then I took a corner and now I can't keep her running at idle unless I have one foot on the brake and one on the gas.

I have read several posts and lots of suggestions, but no post that shows any of these suggestions have worked.

She was doing this before I did these mods.

New single barrel holley carb, new pertronix electronic ignition, new timing drive gear, new plugs, new wires, new cap, new coil. She should be purring like a kitten and actually she was and then as I said I took a corner (same thing happened before I replaced the above) and then she started running like a piece of doodoo.

She's a 71 so I don't have the EGR valve right?? I something mentioned about the vacuum advance. I have done fuel re-route mod.

Frustrated, Please help.

There's always dynamite, but that is a short time feeling of satisfaction and leads to finding another hobby

Thanks

Post subject:  some ideas:

If it only dies at idle, maybe the spark is ok. Timing advance could be stuck or something? I dunno, but I doubt it. I would look for a fuel problem first. Is the choke stuck? Power valve blown? Float/ needle stuck? Idle adjustment slipped out of adjustment? Try looking down the carb while a helper keeps it running. Watch your eyebrows!

Also, a good starting place would be checking the plugs- they can sometimes tell you what is going on.

good luck

Tell us more about this new carb...one of mine, one of someone else's, something from a parts store? The carb is about the only thing that cares about lateral g-forces caused by cornering, and the Holley 1920 is particularly sensitive especially to left turns, so focus your attention there. Could be improper float adjustment, or displacement of the float damper spring, which is item number 54 in the picture below, indicated by the red arrow. The green arrow was for another answer in another thread, so ignore it.

can you drive "55" (Sammy Hagar)
how is your fuel filter? most likely you dislodged some crud in the fuel system & it now is blocking needed passages in the carb. try some carb cleaner in all the holes-- check your filter. Let us know Lawrence

Post subject:  Carb is the answer ??

Sounds like we are focusing on the carb and the fuel line to the carb so that is where I am headed.

As far as where I got the carb, Its brand new from Checker 1920 Holley single barrel. this is the second one I've got from there. The first one leaked like a sieve straight out the box.

So I'm going to start with the Fuel Filter, then go with the other carb suggestions earlier in this thread. I also read somewhere to drop the fuel box and clean the screen ?? Is this truly necessary??

Thanks, my demon looks like this  when it should look like this
