I have started to work on this now and what I have found is that there is all this fine rust cloging the fuel filter and I've come to the conclusion that I need to replace the gas tank. The problem I now have is that I can only find listings for 1977 -1979 tanks (20gal) and I have a 1976. My question is will a 77 tank go in a 76 car.I found a new on on line for 89 dollars and would really like to order it pronto so I can get this thing on the road. Do any of you know if this interchange will work. I don't care about the emissions stuff just the physical size and weather it will just bolt in. I also have a mint Duster tank from a 75 or 76 . Will this fit? |

Look into the tank and make sure it's rust you see. The sock on the fuel pickup in my Dodge van disintegrated and clogged the fuel filter. It looked like rust, but it was plastic. |

It's rust and lots of it. It clogged a new filter in one day. The car has been off the road for 5 years and the tank was probably half full or less so it condensed and rusted. I want to change it. |

i had a few volarie`s and aspen`s, i think they had the same chasiss for all the years they were built so the tanks should be the same. you should check the fuel lines, scale of the steel lines can plug the filter also. |

Hollander's Interchange confirms what you're finding on the aftermarket: The '76 F-body tank is a one-year-only item. Note that interchange information is based on direct, exact interchangeability with no mods considered. It is difficult to imagine such radical changes in the F-bodies between '76 and '77 that a '77-'80 F-body tank (or a '77-'89 M-body tank, for that matter...Diplomat, Gran Fury, New Yorker Fifth Avenue) wouldn't fit with minor creativity. Nevertheless, it's not out of the question, so proceed with some caution. Remember, the A-body had the same chassis for all the years it was built, and there are nine different A-body tanks, many of which will not interchange with one another unless extensive modifications are made. |

I'm going to drop the tank tomorrow and see what's inside.I siphoned out 10 gal of gas that is kinda murky looking and has that bad gas smell but not as bad as really bad gas so it's been diluted with new gas. When it was running it did run very well.so maybe I'll get lucky and just have to clean the tank out and replace the steel lines. I can't believe they would change something as basic as a fuel tank from 1 year to another when the car isn't really any different.No wonder they went broke and had to have the govt bail them out! |

The 77 tanks have a Rollover/Vapor Separator Valve in the top of the tank. The 76 does not have this valve. From looking at the fsm this seems safer than the 76 which uses an inline valve. In a rollover fuel could not leak from the tank. |

Oh! I assumed (and probably others in this thread did, too) that you had drained all the old used-to-be-gasoline out of the system. Definitely get it all out of there. 1) The government did not "bail out" Chrysler Corporation, popular mythology notwithstanding. The government provided loan guarantees, not loans (which were provided by numerous banks worldwide, and which Chrysler paid back before they came due).2) Fuel tanks have not been "basic" for a long time. The A-body fuel tank changed four times — for good reasons each time — between '68 and '76, although they're all basically the same size and shape and attach to the car the same way. The '76/'77+ F-body tank difference is entirely believable, given the amount of half-baked engineering and excessive costcutting that went into the first-year F-bodies. There were tons of changes between '76 and '77, and almost as many between '77 and '78. |

it`s been a while since i looked at a aspen or a volarie but something tells me in 76 the spare tire well in the trunk was made to stand the tire upright and in 77 the tire well disappeared and the tire lay flat that made the gas tank change shape. so in 76 it had a indentation to fit around the trunk floor and in 77 the tank was flat top and bottom. |

There's always www.car-part.com (searchable used auto parts). I come up with a pretty good list of "hits" when searching on '76 Aspen fuel tank. Also, call round to your local radiator shops; you could pull your existing tank, have it boiled out to remove the rust, then apply a good grade of alcohol-resistant fuel tank liner. Another good option might be Tank ReNu, if there's one near you. |

Other than that rollover valve issue, I believe that 76-77 tanks are the same. I have had 1, '77 tank, and it was different from the 78-up version as it had a big dome above the level of the filler. The newer version was used in Diplomats and 5th Avenues all the way til '89. I rememebr when I took that 77 tank to the swap meet it sold QUICK and the guy didnt even flinch on my $60 asking price as he had been looking for one for a while. I believe that the newer version would fit and since you can't see between the tank and trunk floor you would never notice the difference from underneath. The newer F bodies do still have the spare tire well, but starting in 80 they moved the spare to the high ledge and further inwards toward the back seat. The supports appear the same between the 77 trunk pan that the donor tank was bolted to, and my 80, so I can't see the newer tank just bobbling around in there. |

Hello wagon guy, Where I live several tank renewing places are in business. Drag the car in, they take tank out, dip it, chemically treat it , apply an epoxy coat inside and put the tank back on....for $150. Compared to $89 plus shipping plus the hazards and work to replace or do it yourself,....seemed like a good deal when I had mine done. rock '64d100 |
