Clicks as in it'll go from say 40 mph to 100 and bounce around while kind of making a rattling noise?

It is easy to accidentally stretch the speedometer cable when fiddling with it - it will become a little longer and doesn't relax back. That pushes on the speedometer causing binding, noise, and erratic operation. To test for that, loosen the connection at the speedometer to remove any compression - if the problem goes away, you just need to use a Dremel tool (#409 blade) to shorten the cable slightly.

The bad part is sometimes there is too much slop on the inner cable and even though you seated the clamp/ plastic grommet (or lock nut for the '67+ guys) to the back of the cluster, that inner part may not seat correctly to the speedo spindle...

One sure fire way I've found for fixing it after a cluster swap, is jacking up your ride, crawling underneath with a 1" boxend wrench, un hooking the speedo cable from the tranny, push the inner cable with your finger until it stops (taking up the gap/seating it), then reinstalling it to the tranny... if you still are having problems at that point, it's the speedo (or the cable is kinked...(or in some cases I've seen it 'burned' on the exhaust pipe...)

good luck,
