| Post subject: | temp gauge showing hotter than actual temp ? |
Hi, When I was replacing exhaust manifold gasket and such, I decided to change the both temp sensors. ( why , I thought new is good ). Well when I started it up the temp kept rising to hot ,so I cut off the truck. I figured the thermostat was'nt opening . I ran it without a thermostat , and it ran a little over half. Today I put in a Stant ( 195*, probably will get a 180*) and it ran up to hot again . I took out the thermostat , and it ran over half . The only thing I can think of is that maybe the engine temp sensor is not right (Yeah I got it from autozone ) I could not find my old one , I usually keep what I take off for a little while , but some how that little thing escaped .Should I just buy another one from like Napa or the dealership to see if that fixes it , or do any of you have any ideas Thanks in advance Dave |

"Both" temp sensors? Which "both"? What year is this vehicle? Are you sure you've got the right wire on the right sender? If so, it does sound like you got either the wrong sender(s), or a defective sender(s). What brand were they? |

It is a 81 D150 , Im talking about the engine temp sensor -Niehoff- (TS25051) ,and the coolant temp sensor -GP Sorenson (TSU76) these are from advance auto parts . When I unplug the ETS the gauge does not work . Unplug the CTS can not see any difference. I can not remember which of the two(AA , AZ) I bought these from , it has been almost a year since I got them Yes Dan ,I have since learned to get these kind of parts at either dealership or Napa (you get what you pay for) Dave |

One sensor will be a VR (variable resister). And the other will be like a on - off swith that triggers at a preset temp, it basicaly grounds the idiot light that says HOT or Collant on the dash when it gets to this preset temp. The VR is the one for the guage, and the one thta is probably giving the guage incorrect readings. I noticed the one for my 68 Cuda is new & it reads to high. There may be a way to install a resistor inline to calibrate the guage if you can not get the correct sensor. I have not loooked into what values are needed to see if this can be done or not, but if I cant get a correct sender to correct my guage I will be doing so myself. Jess |

Thanks for the info Lucky , I think I am going to check the wiring first , then I will probably try another sensor somewhere else , since it doesnt cost that much. If I am right , the sensor for the dummy light is shorter than the one for the gauge. Dave |
