Post subject:  Removing AC unit Face Plate

My AC unit stopped working and I have narrowed down the problem to the thermostat switch. The problem is I can not figure out how to remove the face plate of the under dash unit to get at the thermostat. I have pulled off the knobs and retaining nuts from the fan and thermostat switched but there does not seem to be any visible fasteners holding the face plate/ louvers to the unit. I am reluctant to just try to pry it off. This is an older aftermarket underdash unit. Anyone have any experience with this type of unit.

Please show us a good, clear photo of your A/C unit so we can see exactly what type you're working with.

Mm, an aftermarket unit. I was thinking of the Mopar/Airtemp units. Who made this one you're working on?

I can not find any data plate or markings on the unit .

have you dropped the unit from it's mount-- you might have to work from the rear of the unit -- instead of the front.

I was hoping that I would not have to do that, since to get to the back I most likely will need to remove the refirgerant line. But, I may have to do that.
Thanks

62T, it looks to me as though the "U-410" shown here might be the one you're working with. Perhaps that company can supply service information.

It looks very, very similar to my JCPenney unit, except for the front molded cover holding the vents. I had to swap out my fan switch. Does it have screws on the top and bottom of the face plate? If so, you will have to remove those, and carefully pull the whole panel off. The wiring will likely come with it, as will the temperature probe that slides into the evaporator core.

Thanks for everyones input. I did contact a manufacturer of a similar looking unit and the face plate just snaps in place with for tabs and it came off with no problem.
Thanks again
Mike
