Post subject:  Dash Pad and Trunk Liner

Has anyone tried the dash pad sold by 1A Auto? The price seems very reasonable but im wondering about the quality? Also has anyone ever bought one of these and painted it? I've never seen a painted dash pad so im wondering if it's even possible to make it look factory?

I've also been thinking about buying one of the original looking vinyl trunk mats. I had one in my car but pulled it out because everytime I had to lift it up to get the spare tire or something, it would just rip a line down the center or one of the sides. Was this just because the mat was 30 years old or do these mats rip like that when new as well?

I got the trunk mat from them for my 64...

Looks just like the original (well almost, it doesn't have missing crumbled out sections)

(so yes, the old mats split)

I got a new mat for my 74 a while back it looks great it is pritty heavy (well hevier then I thought it would be) the only thing I dont like is it does not fit exactly to the floor its not to far off, just does not look exact.

Ok thanks. I wasn't sure if the splitting was caused by the material or just because it was old.

The mat I bought is vinyl fabric. I can't see how it will ever crack.
Are they selling a dash "pad" or is it a dash "cap"? Pads are vinyl covered high-density foam. Caps are injected molded skins that "glue" onto the surface of the old pads.

Good eye. Some of them are caps and some are pads. I've never seen a dash cap in a car. Do they look pretty tacky?

I've never seen a cap installed, but I would think it's appearance could be acceptable, if your original pad is not too severely damaged and you can get the cap glued down tightly along all edges. I think I read somewhere that the "glue" you use is actually like a silicone sealer. Let us know what you decide to do.

I decided to skip the dash pad/cap and just get the trunk liner. It looks really close to the original liner. The only differences are that the new liner has felt fabric on the bottom of it and the liner is a lot thinner than the original. That's probably a good thing though because the weight of the old liner was the #1 reason it ripped so easily when peeled back to get to the spare tire. With the new liner, the felt as well as the thinness of it should keep it from ever ripping under such easy situations.
