| Post subject: | 170 to 225 swap |
My 61 valiant has a good 170 /6 in it right now with ~30,000 miles. I am considering swapping it out to a 225 which I have out of a 65 valiant (lots of miles on this one). I have an Offy 4 barrel intake and headers to attach to the stock engine. Will this swap make a significant difference to power and "fun" factor or should I put the four barrel and headers on the 170. Any comments are appreciated. Blake |

I would think the jump in cubic inches would make some more power. your slant should make about 101 hp and 155 pd. ft. of torque. the 65 225 should have about 145 hp and 215 lb. ft. of torque. so yes there should be a nice jump in peppiness but it depends how much wear is in the new 225. btw where are you located in saskatchewan I live on the west side of Saskatoon. |

If I were in your situation I'd definitely keep the low-miles 170 rather than put in the high-miles, well-worn 225. There's lots to be done to hot up the performance of a 170. Much of it isn't hard to do. Is this car driven regularly? All year round? |

Make the 170 a screamer!!!! 170s rev fast ,so make the 170 with 4bbl and headers fly!! |

The car is driven summer only and generally short commutes with possibly 1 or 2 longer trips a year. If I stay with the 170 what other improvements to performance can be done without a bunch of machining?

Open up the exhaust to 2.25", use Dutra Duels or headers. Doc on this site is Doug Dutra PM him for costs and shipping. Which carb does it have on it? There are a lot of carb things that can be done...you will want the list # . Start here and then we can get you hooked up to the right folks. Frank |

The same things that work on a 225, work on a 170. Only two things to watch out for: 1) Headers are different for a 170 and a 225, in a 66 and down "A" body. They will fit either engine, but the problem is chassis clearence when the headers are not correct for the engine/chassis. 170 motor is 1 in lower then the 225. 2) Piston to valve clearence. A 170 cannot run as big a cam as the 225, without valve reliefs in the pistons. This is due to the piston being at the top of the cylinder on the 170, where the 225 has the piston more then .125 down the cyl. at top center. PS: If you want to install a 225, and your headers are for a 170, in a 66 or older "A" body, in really good condition, I would be interested in a trade for a set of 225 headers. |

Going to use headers and dual exhaust. Do not have a carb for the four barrel yet. I have an edelbrock 650cfm that is new but feel it is probably too big for the /6, or am I wrong in assuming this?

Another vote for the 170. Changing the carb made a huge difference for me alone, and that was just a Carter BBD from a 76 Dodge 318. |

Looks like I will stick with the 170 add the headers duel exhaust and 4 barrel intake. The other change I am considering is a new cam? Any input as to size of cam and size of carb for the 170? |

61 That 4 barrel will be ok, but you will want a jet kit cause I think you will want to jet it down. Watch out for Headers THEY WONT FIT go with Dutra duals, PM DOC on this board. As far as cam selection the 170 revs higher and faster....I would follow Charrlie S's advice PM him and pick his brain HE KNOWS the 170. IMHO Frank |

Harold seems to have QUALITY ISSUES and DELIVERY Issues right now. We have had problems on this board. PM MJ aka New Lancer Man he can give you the details. Frank |
