I have the official 1979 Truck service manual around here somewhere. Moved a few month ago and still unpacking. It would be better to have the truck schematic than the car one if you want to work on the ignition switch end of things. Otherwise the underhood parts will have some similarities. cfield@ll.net |

I hope that we will be there when you start work. I am on Central ST. You might be able to help me a little. The only real problem is that PO ran a jumper wire from the starter relay(hot Lug where the battery cable attatches[sp]) to skinned place on a rather large black wire that is on the alt. with out this 'jumper' there is no fire when the key is on. One guy said it might be the switch. Tried replacing relay no luck. any Ideas - Thanks Mike arabmem@hiwaay.net |

Ummm...this sounds like a circuit "by-pass operation" for a blown fuse-able link, locate the fusable link and test it. Jumping around a fusable link in asking for trouble, can you say wiring "melt-down"? DD Quote:

I looked for wires that might have melted or made bad connections with no luck. The black wire I described is coming out of the firewall, I believe 2nd or third connection over from passenger side.(As You look at it head on)As I say this is going to the alt. and the jumper is going to the hot lug on the relay. I don't like this mess. Thanks in advance for the help - Mike arabmem@hiwaay.net |

I don't remember exactly where it is . Somewhere around the starter relay firewall area.. ktbarnwell1@juno.com |

Somewhere around the starter : relay firewall area.. The fusable link may have thick INSULATION on it but the wire inside of it is smaller than the wire it protects. This is so the fusable link melts before the rest of the wire harness. The fusable link insulation is usually hypolon material (don't know if I spelled it right). This material does not melt or start on fire is the idea. Fusable link wire is about 4 gauge sizes smaller than the wire it protects. Example... If you have 12 gauge wire to the alternator then the fusable link in that wire is 16 gauge. cfield@ll.net |
