Already put a new 1bbl carb on my slant 6, when car is cold, it idles and stays running, but when the car gets warm, the choke releases all the way and the car stalls unless you feather the gas.
This car is a daily driver and needs to be fixed ASAP.

Need more info. What year and model is your car? What exact kind of carburetor did you install, and where did you get it? Is it really new, or is it a "remanufactured"/"rebuilt" carburetor? What adjustments did you make to the carburetor and/or choke after installing the carb?

Don't overlook a leaking choke unloader as the cause, if you've got one. A very common problem that makes the car very rich when cold and very lean warm.

rouge leader,

I am with Dan on this one, however if I were to take a hunch, it sounds like your accelerator pump isn't working or working very well. If you look down the barrel, can you see it squirt when you work the linkage?

My problem is like this, to get the car started, I have to either pump it like 10 times, or spray starting fluid down the carb. And gas just barely dribbles out when I work the linkage.

David,

It's time to rebuild that carb.

On the 1920 Holley the accelerator pump gasket behind the economizer body may be partially covering the pump shooter hole. When its apart squirt some carb cleaner through the hole to be sure it isn't plugged. Then take a leather punch and punch the hole in the gasket a little bigger. That will allow a better pump shot once it is all sandwiched back together.

I also slightly bent the short linkage to take the sloop out.

A carb rebuilder showed me this modification which really helped my carb. Now when I hammer the throttle the car goes sideways. No more dribble.....
It pumps a good strong stream of fuel.

The choke unloader cannot leak. It is the tang on the throttle lever which, when the throttle is wide open, forces the choke open despite it being closed by the choke thermostat. The purpose of the choke unloader is to allow the driver to clear a flooded engine by holding the accelerator to the floor while cranking.

I think you are talking about a faulty choke pulloff.

I can't really picture what you're saying. I have a spare carb that I'll practice on. Thanks for the info.

Car is a '70 Dart Swinger. Put a remanned Holley 1bbl from Autozone on it. Didn't do any adjustments. Idle runs high at first, then when car is warmed up, choke opens all the way and it kills it.

Thanks for any help, it's appreciated.

Well, there's your problem...!

See this thread. Hope you didn't trade away your original! :-(

:? Well, the old man I bought the car from 3 years ago had put another remanned holley on it, so the original is long gone.
I didn't have problems with the choke til recently. Honestly, the holley that was on it when I first got it ran fine for the last 3 years, although the idle was always kinda high. The only reason I replaced this one was because the throttle lever broke off.
And the choke problems started a couple of days before the lever broke. Could the thing that pulls the choke lever down be the problem? A vacuum leak to it? Can I get a replacement?

A 440 is going into my 70 eventually, but I want to keep my six and put it into an old Valiant Signet that I found at a local yard, and put a hyper pak intake on it.

Thanks for any help.
