I located two 170 engines today. I was interested in doing a build with them and was wandering if the blocks have the thick cylinder wall like the 198/225 blocks do. I know no one can tell how thick these block wall are but on average are they as strong as the other blocks of the same years. The shorter deck height and the short strokes has me wanting to build a higher RPM setup for a turbo setup. One thing about turbos is the higher RPM you can turn the more HP will be made. I think one of these engines with a 4 speed and the right turbo would make a great street setup even though I could loose some power from being a smaller engine. One thing about it the smaller CID would help with the low flowing heads and it should be able to make peak power around 7000rpm. It should also give me more hood clearance for a carb hat for the turbo if I go blo-thu. Jess |

Don't forget that everytime you shift you'll blow off your boost. Kinda sucks for the guys who slide it in gears, not just drop it into one hole and call it good. What turbo are you thinking? I was thinking the GT35r or t61 for the 225, but you could go smaller I suppose. Also could you go with the cheap t3 series if you ran duals??? Also look at ceramic coating the piston head and valve, I 've heard good results at keeping the chamber cooler. Yes the upper power band will be beautiful, like the first time you hear Lynrd Skynrd. But don't forget about the torque needed to push the car to begin with. Also the compression, as too little will be sluggish on your starts, and too much will go boom! Keep us updated. |

I do believe the cylinder walls are just as thick as the RG blocks. Doug Dutra bored a 170 .100" over and ran it 7000 RPM with a 198 crank. I have a 170 block, 198 crank and some 3.485" diameter pistons for my own low deck stroker. Now I just need some money! |
