Post subject:  Stalls when put in gear

I have a 82 Dodge 150 truck 225 2 bbl.

Engine starts fine. Idles fine. Choke functions correctly. Good Vacuum. Warms up turns off and restarts fine.

As soon as I shift into gear. Hesitates when put into drive, then stalls. Stalls right away when put into reverse.

What do you think?

Put the timing light on it, and see if the timing drops when put into gear. Sometimes either the vacuum advance is incorrectly plumbed, or the centrifigal advance is affecting timing at idle. In either case, if the drop in RPM associated with an auto in gear retards the timing a few degrees, it will die. Put a volt meter on the ballast resister, and see if the voltage drops when put into gear. It could be the charging system is dropping off with reduction of RPM, or resistance in the wiring harness is preventing full voltage from reaching the ignition system.

Post subject:  Possibity? Lock-Up converter going into Partial Apply?

Circuit to the Convertor for Lock-up is getting bleed over from another circuit (Rear band and Rear clutch = Forward/low or Front Clutch and Rear band = Reverse) in the valve body?
Yet, stays unlocked in Nuetral and Park.
Gummed up Valve Body? It happens.........
Just a thought. :?

Sam,
No Vacuum advance on these. Duel Pickup electronic distributor.
Could very well be as you point out.
Computer is going into retard in any gear at idle.

Have you checked either the timing or the voltage at idle yet? How is ti going? Did you fix the problem? Low voltage will produce this as well, as reduced rpm can drop the voltage below the threshold of ignition failure. It is my theory that the old points distributors were actually far more forgiving of this. My car ran worse after installing the electronic ignition until I got the voltage problems fixed.

Your front pump and input shat are worn out causing the pressure from the direct clutch to bleed into the lock-up (if equipped).

In reverse Low band and direct clutch are applied. Lock-up and direct clutch have the feet hole on the input shaft next to each others.Separated by probably a teflon ring.If pump and shaft are worn, you get that bad result .
