Post subject:  4 speed manual?

I was just wondering if anyone out there knows where I can get a 4 speed trans for my '72 Demon. It's got a /6 225. I've tried junk yards but I've had no luck so far. Please any info will help a lot!

www.car-part.com , searchable used auto parts clear across North America. Put in 1976 Dodge Dart, transmission, search all areas, then on the next screen specify the last option ("M.T. 4-speed"). You'll get a lot of results. Then repeat the search with 1979 Dodge Aspen, and again pick the "4-speed" option on the second screen. You'll get even more results.

Careful there — car 4spd not the same as truck 4spd in the '60s.

Yeh,

Good advice to him Dan! Since I am so used to fitting stuff up I forget what I have to do at times to get stuff to work!

I have and finally used A833OD's from cars, with long tailshaft and 23 spline inputs, because I didn't want NP435's with that low low gear. Course doing so required a new crank, thus new engine, modifying one cross from which to take measurements.

If I had known more of what it would take before I got started, MAYBE I would have put in the 727 to start with....naaah, I wanted the 4 speed, then after having it wanted to try something else. Talk about "project creep"! But ya know, us slanters probably all like a challenge.

Still take Dan to heart, I am almost certain you wouldn't want the super heavy truck 4 speed, the NP435. Of course the guys who have done car conversions have posted periodically of the perils they encountered too, so I would caution you that what you want to do is not likely to be plug and play and not be done in one weekend.

I'd look for a 64-65 Valiant Barracuda Dart iron A833 and use that.It has the 309 first gear and 1to 1 4th and makes for a nice driving 6 .They are out there and so are the bellhousings for them I just bought one last month. It will be a basic bolt in job this way.

does the crank need to be modified to take the pilot bearing? or is it just a buy parts and swap type thing?

The 64-65 trans, has a flange on the rear of the trans, to accept the Ball and Trunion joint. Driveshaft mods would be required.

I believe from the other thread that camel wants the non O/D version.
I'd suggest swap meets or Ebay, though I don't know whether his beef is that he only has 3 gears or if its that the shifter is "on the tree".... he's new, maybe if thats the issue (he wasnt real clear ) a tranny hump and a 3 spd shifter and rods would solve his "beef" with his car?

If this is true, then I would heavily suggest the A-230 3 spd (has synchro 1st gear...inland short throw shifter...1971-1974 ish) as the tranny to look up, they are fairly cheap to get, and will bolt right up to his 3spd bellhousing, and then he'll need to install a hump and new carpet.

Good idea!

Hey guys thanks for all the info. But I wanted was a four speed not because the shifter is on the tree but because I want that one more gear and my tranny is leaking really bad right now and I thought to myself well this is the perfect time to get what I want out of her.
