Yes, you got it right. That seems to work best on daily drivers for improved torque.
I just did the swapping of intakes over Christmas. My car was recently rebuilt and the head was already bowl ported/street port and the intake was gasket matched. The exhaust was ported too, but not gasket matched. I did open it up some but not all the way. So my head was already the way I wanted it per Doc's recommendations for mileage and torque.
While I had the manifolds apart I cleaned up the exhaust manifold as far as I could and gasket matched it. Same for the bottom from 2" to 2.25" to match the exhaust pipe.
The original cast iron intake I had gasket matched during the engine build, on the new aluminum manifold I left it stock this time.
The difference seems to be much better torque and better mileage.
I didn't think the exhaust porting and not porting the intake manifold and switching to the aluminum intake would make that much difference, but during the cold weather it brought back the mileage to almost what I was getting last summer.
Racers will open up both sides for max flow.
