| Post subject: | Stock '72 Valiant Dyno numbers |
Hi, I had a little time to play today and went to the local speed shop for some baseline numbers.... I have a '72 Plymouth Valiant with 225/auto trans combo and Power Steering as the only real power robbing option. I recently found a NOS 1920 Holley Carb that I installed...everything is stock including the original exhaust system at 45,000 miles....the only mod is the fuel filter mod and extended tip spark plugs and timing is set at 8 Degrees BTDC. Things to keep in mind for my runs, peak torque was coming in at @ 2250RPM's and holding level then dropping by 3500 RPM, Horsepower peaked at at @3000 RPM and started to fall off by 3750RPM....speed shop is sending me pics and I will post pics of car and dynojet graphs soon. First pull was 79.99 HP and 134.20 Torque....the technician tells me she was a little lean and it kept wanting to downshift into 2nd making it hard to get a clean run.....I was ROFL as my prediction was 70 HP so I was just blown away by the numbers.....tech says lets do another run....OK! Second pull was almost identical and was plagued with downshifting so he shut her down and then lifted the hood and started to say what if we do this and that??? OK! Third pull I shortened the kickdown linkage and that solved the downshifting...woohooo and then I removed the Air/Fuel screw protection cap thingy and backed the screw about 3/4 turns and was rewarded with a slightly less lean mixture, thumbs up from the tech, "she went 96 miles per hour", and 80.78 HP and 138.08 torque, WOW !! For an engine that was starting to drop off by 3750RPM's it sure made alot of noise but it was fun and very enlightening....thoughts of lighter reciprocating mass, electric fan, milled head, bigger valves/cam/exhaust stormed in....still deciding what mods to do next....any ideas to hit the magical 100hp ?........nico |

Very cool and good report! Yes, to hit 100 HP go to 2.25" exhaust and a good chambered muffler like mine. $30.00 will get you the "Thrush". It's fully welded and very thick just like the Flow Master 40. I would recurve the distributor so you can get a little more timing. Great little carb! I love mine. |

Is your car still equipped with a points distributor? Is so go for EI and dial it in tighter for that extra couple of HP...-D.Idiot |

I would of unbolted the pipe from the exhaust manifold and done another pull with open exhaust! DD |

Thanks for the comments, guys! The next mod will be dutra duals with complete dual exhaust system with an H-pipe and large stock V8 style mufflers and tail pipes with stock style turn down tips. Then another dyno day will be scheduled to chart the increase in power. I do have a EI kit but am not decided if I want to use it on this car yet...I may just recurve/work with the stock unit for now. I wish now that I would have disconnected the exhaust pipe |

I'm envious you have this kind of facility within convenient range! I would say next step: Carefully-curved electronic ignition (maybe HEI), 2bbl carb, Dutra Duals. |

Hey, Dan, he's just lookin' for 100 r.w.h.p. Couldn't a Super Six, Dutra Duals and HEI will blow that wide open — 110, 115 h.p. even?!!! Jeez, let's not get crazy here. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely... Folks actually havin' fun with their little underappreciated slants... brings a tear to my eye. <sniff.> Enjoy, Valleyant, and congrats on the great pulls! |

Hi, Dan the speed shop is @ 5 miles from my house, so it is very convenient. I wish I could afford to dyno the car more often. I have a baseline and will chart improvements at the Dragstrip for a while before I go back for more dyno time. I have collected the pieces you suggested but am resisting the temptation to install them for a little while at least. I want to see how quick I can make it before adding them. I will continue to update and will get pics up soon of my black and white Valiant. nico |

Basic upgrades like recurves, new igintion, and a super six will blow a 100hp out of the water. Not exactly a 12 sec engine, but should be pretty impressive. If you don't mind I would like to see these add-on's before the cam and vlaves stuff to see what numbers it kicks out. Kinda like a pyramid of hp numbers. 1) Super six, igintion, exhuast, recurve 2) mill .1, valves, cam, springs, 3 angle 3) top level, anything goes inidividual results. Thought this might be cool to put together with the Engine Matrix. Have fun with your engine, I keep mine as anymore all it takes is money to build a v8 which is kinda sad. |
