Post subject:  Three speed to Four or Five Speed

This thread is split out of the R154 thread.... CJ

If I was looking for a trans either a 4 speed or 5 speed for my /6 225 what would be the best way to go? I am on a budget and I want my Demon to have something better than the crapy 3 on the tree it has now.

It depends on what you want out of the car. Probably the cheapest /least "painful" way that needs the least amount of home-engineering would be an 833, 4 speed, you can get one of these with 4th gear as an overdrive if you wanted. Just like the factory put into cars like yours with teh 4 speed option.

Thanks. But would the first three gears be like the three speed?

Yeah it would be, IF you get the Overdrive version.

Does anyone know where I can find a 4 speed that is not OD? And will it work with my stock crank and stock bellhousing?

Yup, they made the A 833 both ways, the ones that the factory put in our cars prior to 75ish was the same trans without the overdrive. Bolts in the same way as the 76ish-up A833 OD; set the 2 next to each other and theyre hard to tell apart; I'd tell you about the levers that bolt to the trans but sometimes swap meet trannys have them missing; most people that would have one to offer for sale would know which one they have. They made a heavier duty version, the "Hemi" trans but they guys definitely know when they have them; 18 spline clutch shaft vs 23 on the one that you'd be after and as anything "hemi", (they were used behind other big blocks too) the price is way overinflated, so that would be a huge clue too.
Do you know what the "Bearing retainer" is? Where the throwout bearing rides, the flange that holds it to the front face of the trans, they were 4 different sizes; if you get one that measures 5-1/8" diameter you have an OD version. I know the next one down is like 4-7/8ish, the other 2 are smaller yet, though I can't recall the numbers off the top of my head.
Don't go TOO old (65-older) as they have a flat 4 bolt flange at the output shaft; make sure the one you get has a splined shaft for a slip yoke.

Why don't you like your car as is; is it because the shifter is on the column, or that you only have 3 speeds? Check out your rear end gear ratio; if they are at a 3.23 or higher numerically, if you are going to go thru all of the work, you would be better with the O/D version as gas isn't cheap these days..... with the non OD version the engine will run exactly the same RPMs in 4th gear as it does now in 3rd. If you have any lower (numerically) gear then it may cost you mileage if you are mostly in town to go with the OD because then you will be lugging the engine, but thats the advantage of a MANUAL trans, being able to decide yourself what gear to run in.... on this trans you can run around town in 3rd because with the OD, 3rd = 3rd in your current trans, then on the hwy you can save $$$$ on gas with the OD.. Or are you looking to race and want the lesser gear splits to keep your ratio closer, than relatively wider gear splits that your 3 speed provides? A little more info would help us help you.

Well I what I want is a trans that I can get gas milage with and if I am feeling froggy a little race on the free way. I travel in the city a bit but it takes a while to get there too.
