I was at a local pick'n pull and found a nice 1976 AMC Hornet, had a straight six/auto combo....took a peak at the rear end , it had a rear pan but I didn't count the number of bolts (they actually looked like allen head bolts), it also had a rounded shape to the bottom and it looked quite a bit more beafy than my 7-1/4....anyone have some insight on this differential? thanks, nico

The AMCs had a "weird" hub setup on them that could be difficult to remove, like the early 60s 8-3/4s did. The Jeeps used it until they replaced the CJ with the Wrangler. They have conversion axles for the Jeeps; not much experience with them but if I remember right they had a tendency to strip out under high torque.... big blocks racing 1/4 mile, or Jeeps in 4 wheel low in true 4-wheeling" situations; Very low demand so I do not believe that there would be much parts availibility there.

Look for a 5 bolt Maverick, Comet, Monarch, or Granada rear.

From what I was told it is a bolt and go. Just need a conversion U-joint.

I sold a Maverick rear to a guy for a '65 Rambler. I originally bought it for my Duster.

Watch the ratios, just as you would on a real A-body rear. My son's Monarch came with a 2.47. It might help on highway economy, but it's not ideal around town.
