Post subject:  Broken Flange Bolt

Hi all,

I did it. I twisted off the stud on the exhaust manifold (to the exhaust pipe flange).

At this point I need the easiest, quickest repair possible (I'll have to repair it tomorrow, so I can drive it on Wednesday).

Should I pull the exhaust manifold and drill out the stud? (I believe it is broken off flush with the face of the flange).

Suggestions appreciated...

Vise-Grips, and there not used for extracting. Use them to hold that side of the flange together.

You said quick and easy. :D

Thought about vise grips... or a good c-clamp.

Seems like there would be some kind of repair for this... some clamp that would be designed for the job.

Does anyone know if you can get enough of an angle to drill this bolt out while the manifold is still on the car? Maybe with a right angle drill?

if you dont fix it right i can also reccomend bailing wire that is what is done to one of my darts when i got it they wrapped it around the exhaust pipe and then around a bolt if i remember right the bolt on the head for pulling the motor pulled the pipe up tight and wrapped the wire tight with a pull upward very tight to keep the pipe sealed to the manifold hope you get it working or fixed with out too much trouble. Good Luck Justin

I'll probably dismantle, drill it out and replace with a bolt. Need to find a manifold gasket (head to manifold) somewhere around here. I'll try NAPA in the morning.

When I worked in the exhaust shop I did see a "special" clamp to do the vise-grip type fix, but I have no idea where to find them. it was basically a C clamp with points where the pads would be, and a hex where the sliding handle on the end of the screw would be.

For the "clamp" type fix, I would suggest a "C clamp vise-grip" either a 4" or 6" should work. If it is the rear stud that is broken, I would slide some heater or similar hose over the handles to keep it from shorting out the starter.

The best fix of course is to pull the manifold and drill it out. I drill all the way through so a nut and bolt can be used and the problem never happens again. You may be able to drill it out on the car from underneath, but it may be as much of a pain as pulling it off.

Good luck.
