i just replaced my instument cluster in my 65 dart and i had the dash in there loose. well, it slipped out of its place and the the red lead on the instument cluster for the alternator hit the metal dash and it shorted. i heard a pop and there was some smoke under the hood. i ripped the panel off the metal to stop the short and tore the pos battery terminal off. after that i made sure nothing was touching and reconnected the battery, now there is nothing. no lights or any power to anything. i replaced the ballast resistor cause i thought that was where the smoke came from. did i fry my voltage regulator? what do you think. what popped? pljaime@gta.net

I'm guessing you blew your fusible link, although off the top of my head, I can't recall if a '65 Dart has one. It's meant to burn out first and protect the rest of your wiring. Look for a thick wire (possibly with a flag or tag) under the hood and near your main wire bundle bulkhead connector. lancer_41@excite.com

Check the bulkhead of wires on the engine side of the firewall next to the master cylinder. I believe there is a fusible link there. If its blown, you will see melted insulation. MrSlant@pacbell.net

Your fuseable link did it's job. You need to thank it for saving you from the nasty job of changing a wiring harness. The F.Link on a 65 Dart usually comes off the bottom / inner bulkhead plug socket and runs up to the big post on the starter relay. It is a pretty thick wire and is usually marked with a plastic "tag". Machanics rule # 3 Always disconnect your battery before doing electrical work. Easy way to find the break in the circuit is with a simple test light. Just connect the clip to ground (negative)at the battery and probe along any suspected posative cable. God bless America!
