Howdy,

I'm doing some homework on short tailed manual three speeds as I intend to re-fit the Barn Job. I'm not finding the answers I need as yet (due, I'm certain, to my sad searching skills) so I'd like to float some of my questions here while I look.

At which vehicles and years should I be looking?
What are the proper numbers for these boxes?
Are the bell housing mount patterns the same as the long tails?
Do the parts (other than tail shafts & housings of course), ie gears and such, from long tail units interchange (particularly the input shafts)?

And an after thought; does a cross reference chart of some sort exist?

The only short 3-speed manual trans I ever had was in my '74 D100 Club Cab. Any 1/2 ton 3-speed with a 2-piece driveshaft should have a short tail trans.

No idea the ID numbers of the transmission.

Don't know what bellhousing pattern it used, but it should be the same as if the truck had a long tailshaft.

Don't know about parts interchange. Maybe someone 'round here has a truck parts book.

Post subject:  Car and truck jobs...

Truck long tail shaft units will probably in the same vein as the top loaders, as with all 3 spds they use their own bellhousing, or can use a 4 speed bellhousing that has the same bearing retainer size and is drilled for the 3 and 4 speed patterns... the only exception will be the NP435 bellhousing that is for that tranny only (5.125" BR hole and a nice square pattern that will not 'jive' with the A-833 pattern).

If I was to pick one for a car, I'd pick the A-230 hand down for a short box... it has the syncro 1st gear (pretty nice for a floor shifter to be able to use the granny gear while stuck launching uphill without stopping and doing the left/right foot boogie)...

After 1975 the truck bell should be able to take any 1975+ A-833 OD and 3spd as the bearing retainer changed... (that being said you can use any earlier tranny in the late bell by using a bearing retainer from a 1975+ A-230 (5.125 OD but the bolt holes are drilled for the smaller input shaft bearing like the pre-1974 3-speeds and A-833 4 speeds...)

You may be in for quite an online and junkyard search these days trying to get something hooked up...

Best of Luck...
