Post subject:  exhaust pipe

I need to replace the exhaust system on my 64 Dart. I have a 2" dia 71 Dart v8 single-exhaust tailpipe that is almost brand new. I would like to install a Turbo sytle muffler. Summit sells them for $35 for the Walker and $20 for the Summit brand. Of course, the big problem is I am missing a head pipe. I've gotten some quotes from local muffler shops who aren't thrilled about trying to use my tailpipe and who are less thrilled when I ask them if I can supply the muffler (they want to sell me their $50 Turbo).

Autozone can order a headpipe, PN 385817. I've got a bad feeling that it'll end up fitting a 76 Dart 225 but it won't fit my 64 170cid A-833...
does anyone know anything about this part? anyone know how to contact the vendors? (Meremont or IRVIN) ??

any other ideas?

To my knowledge, this header has never been offered in 2 inch and yes, the early cars are different so later ones do not fit. As you know, the 170 adds more complexity to this seeing it lowers the outlet by 1 inch.

Here is what I do... I have a "master pattern" (just a welded-up pipe sample) for this headpipe, which I take to the muffler shop to have them bend me a new 2 inch copy. If you have an old 170 header pipe, just use that. The new bent pipe tends to be a bit long on the ends so I usually have to trim to fit, then weld-on the flange. This type of work can be somewhat time consuming, especially if you do not have welding equipment.

One other pattern trick is to use PVC "sprinkler pipe" and a heat source to make a sample to bend to.
