I've gone through lots of articles, and still have questions I just need answered. I really want to build a big valve head, but I want to be posative i'm doing the right things. I have an '81 head all cleaned up and ready to go to the machine shop, but I'm not sure what to ask for! it'll be a basic street build with a little spice. I got a M.P. ...43 cam and napa lifter set, new chain and gears, A.T.C. cr8H converter, and a Transgo shift kit. She's a 79 super six setup, 2.76 8/14" , 3550#, 904, with 2 1/4' single (with cat)exhaust. I think a .060-.080" mill is probably in order ( Felpro printoseal gasket), the 3/8 guides are wasted, so there's no better time to press in the 11/32'ths. Now with the stupid questions. I have a ton of chevy valves and would really love to use them .Will The 1.72's clear the stock bore? If I have the exhaust seats cut to 1.5" is the head soft there? do I need new seats pressed in? Do I need intake seats cut, or put in? Am I better off having the spring seats cut for chev. springs, or buying 1.5" 11/32's retainers? Either this is way too complicated, or I just need to spend a lot more time at the machine shop. Also, M.P. discontinued the Distributor advance kit, what's a good solution? Is there anything I might be missing? Thanks Fourgasman@aol.com |

Is there anything I : might be missing? : Thanks Gasman, I would appreciate it if people would try the "search" function since I have answered this question a few times, but no problem, here it is: 1.72" SBC valves work great on intake w/no bore notch. 1.50" SBC valves also work great, but need about a 0.030" bore notch for clearance on a stock bore. On my 0.060"-over motor, I used no bore notch. The head strength is fine for both valves - plenty of meat. I have pressed in hardened EXH seats on all my heads for unleaded gas. I have had the spring seats cut and used SBC retainers, springs, seals, locks. A good machine shop can get the heights and such right. Make sure to blend the ports around the valve openings, or have them do it, AFTER having the seats cut/installed - flow increases here. I spent $400 and $500 on my two heads including all (new) parts and labor, except I did the port smoothing myself. Don't know about distr. kit. I always just buy springs from the hardware store and cut/bend them to fit and get the advance curve I want. Hope this helps, and happy building! Lou |

I never saw much difference in the 2 kits, except for the instruction sheets. Here is the link to recurving instructions: DD Distributor Recurving |

Took the head into the machine shop friday, the machinist did a lot of looking at me funny. He did have a question I couldn't answer. What would be the best mill for my combo? I think .080 would put me at about 9.0:1 correct? would that remain mid grade octane friendly with the camshaft I chose? Fourgasman@aol.com |

I just went to the local speed shop today and told the proprieter that I wanted a crane distributor kit # ..... He said, "I'm not going to have anything like that, but I can order it". It's on the way. Thanks for the instructions, Doc. Fourgasman@aol.com |
