Hi guys,

I need help with installing an electronic ignition from a 74 duster w/ a 225 into a 72 dart w/ 225. I have the distributor, ballast resister, ecu, and all the wires that were connected to them. Also I have a few vacuum advances with different numbers on the arms i found laying around the duster at the junkyard. The numbers are 6.5x, 8.5x (2 of em -one is in the elec. distr.), and 11R. So, how do I wire this thing up? Which ballast resistor should I use? and Which of the three advances is better to use for street application with a stock build? This is a lot to ask for, so thank you very much in advance!

The hard part......
I am afraid you need to get a FSM and look at the wiring diagram very close. I would trace it out or re-draw it with the few wires concerned. Then it is much easier to hook up.

The distributor wires are easy since the plug only allows one way, same with the ECU, hopefully you kept the resistor plugged in, so that leaves the coil wires and run and start wires. Hopefully that narrows it down.

The easy part......
I am using the 11R can and really like it for max mileage. I recurved the distributor when I installed it so everything worked out perfectly.

You won't need the FSM at all if you know what to splice into...

Using a test light and laying everything out before you start it shouldn't take the novice much more than 1 hour to wire it in assuming you use the cheapy crimp connectors and electrical tape...FYI, all the 'new' replacement ECU's are 4 pin any way.. the 5th pin is for the 'dual ballast' resistor (aka, the 'start' resistor)...


With the EI distributor... pull spark plug #1, pull distributor cap, roll engine over by hand until the distributor rotor is about to the #1 cap tower position, put thumb in the empty spark plug hole and roll a bit more to see if you are getting compression (when you pull your thumb/finger out, the pressure will exhale)... check your timing mark and get it to '0' or TDC....

If we are using the 11R distributor (does it still have the parts number tag?), I would use the 8.5R vacc. pod.... Roll timing mark back to about 8BTDC... or just a bit before the 10BTDC mark... install distributor so the rotor will point at the #1 tower, check to make sure the mag pickup is aligned to a 'tooth' on the reluctor (if not you will have to mess with the adjuster plate unitl you can get it 'on' the spot)...

Make all your hookups (vacc. and electrical) and see how it goes...

thanks you guys for all of your help. I installed the mopar electronic ignition and it was a no-go. So, i decided to try the hei upgrade instead... And i have to tell ya that i have never felt an older car idle and run so good! Feels like a totally different car! :) So, thanks again for your help.
