| Post subject: | Manual to Automatic Transmission Conversion |
I have a '64 Dodge Dart, 170 /6. I want to pull out the three speed and put in an automatic. I can not get a straight answer on this: Will an automatic fit an engine that originally came with a 3 speed? What adapters are needed to make this happen? Does anyone know of a manual or website that explains how to do this? ANY assistance is very much appreciated!! |

Yes, if you use a '67 or earlier automatic with the small pilot on the torque converter it will fit your 1964 vintage 170. No adapters are needed. Get the factory service manual and it will show the automatic and it's linkages. You can use the '65 and earlier pushbutton shifter trans or the '66-'67 rod shifted trans. If you want to use an aftermarket shifter I would use the later transmission. |

You will need to get the adaptors for your radiator to plumb in the connectors for cooling the tranny fluid, the tranny lines to and from the radiator as well... -D.Idiot |

| Post subject: | DI, re. the adapters for the radiator |
DI, When I changed from a 3 speed to a 727 I had a radiator with no provision for trans. cooling. While pondering the cure I lucked into a trans cooler from a forum member that I attached to the front of the radiator (behind the grille). Can the car guys do this or is there too little room in front of the radiator...because all I had to find then was tranny line adapters to the tranny body. Hard to find but I got them in a junkyard. Also I put on a deep pan and brazed in a fitting for and installed a temp gage...and have found out the tranny NEVER exceeds 100 degrees F except if idling in gear in summer in stuck traffic, then it will go to 140. Reason I ask is if he has a radiator with no provision for cooling, the external cooler will be a lot cheaper than a radiator. rock '64d100 |

Mounting an aftermarket trans cooler works well and it's an easy solution to the problem. FYI, I have all the parts needed for this conversion and I have done this exact conversion a number of times. Send me a PM and we can discuss the installation details and cost for a "kit" of parts. DD |
