| Post subject: | Strange noise coming from rear wheel area |
A couple days ago I pulled out of a parking lot and started hearing a strange "whomp whomp whomp" noise coming from the right rear wheel area everytime the axle tuns over. I checked everything in the brakes and theres nothing touching. I also took the cover off the rear end and everything looks great. What do you guys think this could be? The wheel bearing maybe? Also what kind of gear oil does my Duster take? I couldn't seem to find it in my FSM. Thanks |

My brothers truck does that and they said it was the wheel bearing. |

Probably a faulty wheel bearing, but could also be a (badly) faulty tire or something the matter with the brake assembly at that corner. Auto trans cars got 2.76:1 rear axle ratio by default unless some other ratio were ordered individually or as part of a package (e.g. trailer tow). |

I ruled out the tire/wheel by throwing on the spare and getting the same noise. Any tips on replacing the real wheel bearing? I've never done one before. |

You will need to take the axle to a shop or garage to have a new axle bearing pressed on. Call around and get some quotes. Pick the shop and have them order the needed axle bearing, have them call when they have it "in hand". At that point, pull your axle and take it into the shop for the "press work". A good mechanic can do the bearing swap in 30 minutes or less. DD |

Thanks guys. It turned out to be the wheel bearing. I did like Doc said and took the axel in and the guy did it for a fair price. The oil seal he gave me was too small so I went and got another one. He said he would do an hours worth of labor to pay me back for it, so I'll take that
